It's best to get your Paypal account confirmed and verified before using it. Add a credit card (simon.com) to it and banking details (ing.com) or Yes you will be limited each and every time once you hit the $500 limit.

Default Opening a new PayPal without SS#. Possible?

Once they do, any account you created is toast.

Two months ago, I created an account on Paypal and i didn't even have an ebay account yet. They limited it immediately and wanted my social.

If Paypal asks for your social, and if your name does not line up exactly with your social, and Paypal and EBAY are linked, then you are dead.

It appears to me that there is absolutely no way to ever use Paypal successfully. If they ask for SS, the account is toast. And if you change the address and give them the SS, they will link you to all your past Paypal accounts and all your linked EBAY accounts will get suspended.

Modee says it is a dead end, but merchant accounts are only practical for some.

Is anyone successfully using Paypal anymore (new accounts created this year)? Has anyone gotten around the dreaded request for a Social?

PayPal IS a dead end my man. Merchant account is much better and should be used instead of PayPal. It is not easy, because of verification, and setup. But it's a way to go.

You do have your W-2 don't you? Instead of your SS you can use company tax ID. I don't think it's legal, but I don't think anyone would come after you if you do. That's the only way that I see to use PayPal successfully, or you have mom, wife, aunt, father, friend, I bet you do. Make an account on them.

Default I think you are out of date...

last I read on this board, EBAY is not approving any new merchant accounts. So unless you have a way around that you are back to Paypal.

Extension, please do NOT say that paypal is a dead end. Paypal is the beginning of the new ebay, sooner or later in the US it will be required. Already in the UK and Auz paypal has to be accepted on listings. So it most certainly is not a dead end, it's a requirement.

Have to agree w/you ... pp is the mindset of eb buyers...like it or not.

We are just going to have to be very careful, share as much info./war-stories as possible & figure it out.

They only ask you to provide a SS # if you're in the US. Pack your stuff and move over here to Japan, nobody can ask you for a SS # here.

Apparently, Paypal is making this request on a ton of accounts already. And it kills them when they do because many are business aliases.

But Paypal doesn't care. If you read the thread on why EBAY is suspending so many and what their business model is moving towards, you will understand.

Requesting social doesn't hurt the big business selling through EBAY, it is just a way of nailing the little guy.

I had Paypal request SS on an account I just opened that wasn't even linked to an EBAY account yet a couple of weeks ago. I was like, BZZZZT. I just dumped the account. Screw them.

paypalsucks.com is having more relevance every day.

Thats why the best options are
1. A pre 11/07 account (No Paypal Required)
2. Invoice buyers from your merchant account, if they pay w/ PP, refund and resend invoice.

Default Right....

Agreed. Sad, but true.

Ironically, it seems stupid for Paypal to be so anal. Seems they will be losing business to merchant accounts unnecessarily if they do this.

But I think it gets back to where EBAY wants to be in the future.

Paypal is very easy for many. And the only way for some. I have a niece for example that loves EBAY and is 16. She isn't supposed to be on EBAY, but she loves it and got hooked (worse things to get hooked on). She can't get a true merchant account and she can't pay with a credit card (without alerting mummy). So paypal is all she has.

Even with all of its drawbacks, Paypal is convenient for many that cannot pay with credit card for one reason or another or that cannot easily get a merchant account. And the barrier to entry on the merchant accounts for the real small seller is just not worth it.

Ebayaintstupid, I'm 16, and I have a merchant account... so it is possible

But I agree with you that paypal is so widely used because it's convenient, and moreover, they market it as being the safest payment method around.

It's just a shame that sooner or later, they will bring the compulsory paypal rule to the US.

If they ask for S.S number. Get the number from a family member or friend that never used paypal before. And open a new account. I did it and it worked

Default Using a false SS# is ill advised...

it will only work if the name matches. If it does not and they run a check, you are screwed.

Using a false SS is a federal offense. Faking out EBAY and Paypal is sport. Don't get them mixed up.

As far as being 16, you bad girl. LOL.
