Have to agree w/you ... pp is the mindset of eb buyers...like it or not.

We are just going to have to be very careful, share as much info./war-stories as possible & figure it out.

They only ask you to provide a SS # if you're in the US. Pack your stuff and move over here to Japan, nobody can ask you for a SS # here. :D

Apparently, Paypal is making this request on a ton of accounts already. And it kills them when they do because many are business aliases.

But Paypal doesn't care. If you read the thread on why EBAY is suspending so many and what their business model is moving towards, you will understand.

Requesting social doesn't hurt the big business selling through EBAY, it is just a way of nailing the little guy.

I had Paypal request SS on an account I just opened that wasn't even linked to an EBAY account yet a couple of weeks ago. I was like, BZZZZT. I just dumped the account. Screw them.

paypalsucks.com is having more relevance every day.

Thats why the best options are
1. A pre 11/07 account (No Paypal Required)
2. Invoice buyers from your merchant account, if they pay w/ PP, refund and resend invoice.

Default Right....

Agreed. Sad, but true.

Ironically, it seems stupid for Paypal to be so anal. Seems they will be losing business to merchant accounts unnecessarily if they do this.

But I think it gets back to where EBAY wants to be in the future.

Paypal is very easy for many. And the only way for some. I have a niece for example that loves EBAY and is 16. She isn't supposed to be on EBAY, but she loves it and got hooked (worse things to get hooked on). She can't get a true merchant account and she can't pay with a credit card (without alerting mummy). So paypal is all she has.

Even with all of its drawbacks, Paypal is convenient for many that cannot pay with credit card for one reason or another or that cannot easily get a merchant account. And the barrier to entry on the merchant accounts for the real small seller is just not worth it.

Ebayaintstupid, I'm 16, and I have a merchant account... so it is possible

But I agree with you that paypal is so widely used because it's convenient, and moreover, they market it as being the safest payment method around.

It's just a shame that sooner or later, they will bring the compulsory paypal rule to the US.

If they ask for S.S number. Get the number from a family member or friend that never used paypal before. And open a new account. I did it and it worked

Default Using a false SS# is ill advised...

it will only work if the name matches. If it does not and they run a check, you are screwed.

Using a false SS is a federal offense. Faking out EBAY and Paypal is sport. Don't get them mixed up.

As far as being 16, you bad girl. LOL.

THing is paypal wants either SS or federal tax id. Your company has a federal tax id, either that or you can register a business. In one instance its id theft and in other it is expensive. I n both cases it is more expensive than a merchant account.

Default Opening a new PayPal without SS#. Possible?

Hello everyone,

I have a paypal account but my ebay account has been suspended. Therefore, I was suggested not to use the same paypal account, even though I changed the paypal email and removed the old one. My question is, now I am planning to open a new PP account but with a friend of mine's bank information. However, he is an international student here in the US and does not have a SS# or any bills sent to his house. He said, he could get a letter from his landlord to prove that he resides at that address. I will be asked SS# by PP in order to lift the $500 limit. Since he does not have a SS#, do you guys think PP will consider the fact that he is an international student and does not have a SS#?

Thank you.

Yes Canada PP is better but he is asking how to lift the $500 limit. So that link will work. All you have to do is 2 of the 3. So to lift the $500 just add cc and bank account and verify them.

Default How long before PayPal asks for SS#?

I have opened a new ebay and PayPal account and have been using them for the past 3 months. I lifted my initial $500 limit with PayPal and since I do a volume of couple thousand a week. I withdraw my money almost everyday in $200-400 amounts. I am just nervous still. How long before PayPal will ask for SS#? and for other documents?
what is the best way to get around if they ask for SS#?
Have a merchant account but didnt get it approved by eBay yet. I am just reluctant about that. any comments?

My Friend from past experience all it takes is a few dispute to trigger a limit account also if you do daily withdraws always remember that when pp system detects daily transaction also triggers them to call your number listed with them so be ready for calls also always try not to use debit card as CC for gas purchases the reason I say this is because any transaction thats done with the pp debit card use as CC in large amounts also triggers them to call for you to verify last five transaction Etc and if you dont answer call by x amount of time it will also limit your account because then think your card is lost so remember don't use the pp debit card as a CC always use pin debit transactions. For SS# Not Sure hope this helps you stay up longer ..

I have had about 4 disputes so far and I cleared 2 of them. Usually item not received claims. I also leave about $200 in my PP account at all times. They havent called me for anything yet. I pray that they dont...

Default Correct way to start new Paypal account?

I opened a new paypal account yesterday with virtual name.

I opened a new bank account with ING Direct, and used one of my credit card that I have.

Today, I have this message:

# May 14, 2008: Unusual account activity has made it necessary to limit account access until additional verification information can be collected.

They're asking me to confirm my SSN, bank account, four-digit PayPal code for Visa Card, and Location.

How can I pass the SSN part with a virtual name?
