Does MAC change with a new VM?

I know amazon can track the two internal MAC's of your network - i.e, your computer and your modem/router.

So my question is, would you be in the clear just creating a new VM and changing your mac on the modem.

Also, in my network I use several switches, does anyone know if they count as the "second" MAC as I do not believe I can change them, as they are unmanaged switches.

That's a big misconception. A MAC address is only known by the next hop along the network path. That's as simple as I can state it without getting more technical on the subject.

The MAC address is used only on a local network (mainly on the data link layer of the OSI model). As packets leave your local network, the mac address is replaced by the mac address of the router. This happens at every router along the route between you and any other site.

The only way a MAC address is seen by external sites is if you have a program running to broadcast it (OR if they are directly tied into your local network).

But I understand alot of people somehow believe they do. I won't want to dissuade someone that wants to take extra precautions.

If you are concerned that Amazon will somehow see your MAC, using VM's will alter the MAC for you and achieve what you're looking for.

I'm not sure what you mean by second MAC?

Never heard of this second MAC...unless you mean NIC?

Thanks An0nym0u$, I got this misnomer from the stealth guide for Amazon. Maybe I was going off an old version?

When I said second MAC, I was referring to the next device on my network as every device has their own mac.

So the only difference between ebay and amazon, is that I should create a new vm per amazon (and try to have a unique browser fingerprint) whereas on ebay I can create 10 accounts on one VM - right?
