Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification It looks like Amazon has rolled out with yet another system update.
Now it seems most accounts are requesting a two-step verification, otherwise your account will be automatically suspended within a couple months of registration.
I have done a couple of them and they are no big deal.
You have 2 options to verify and receive code:
1. Text Message (SMS) - Works best for multiple accounts
2. Authenticator APP
Just make sure to use a phone # that has never been used on Amazon previously and that you have access to. Remember to keep the phone number live and active, so you don't lose it!
Otherwise you may run into a nightmare if your account is locked and you lose the verification phone #
Any country phone # provider seems to work fine (I tested 3 international #s on the accounts to accommodate international sellers).
After you complete the two-step verification process, you'll be given the option to verify your device. Once your device is verified, you have the option to "remember" it and avoid having to do the two-step verification every time you login with that device. Keep in mind, any new device added to log into your Amazon account will most likely trigger a code to verify.
That means if you are planning on getting a new laptop, make sure you have access to the verification number you provided them with. Solutions:
1. Use any phone # you have, any country, as long as it has never been used before on Amazon.
2. Google voice seems to be working (Keep in mind if they are inactive for 9 months you can lose your google voice number).
This is mostly available to USA, UK might have a harder time getting a Google voice # but still possible.
3. Prepaid phones / SIM cards picked up at local stores. Secure your Amazon account and don't get locked out!
Cheers :thumb: |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification I use two step verification with practically everything (including ebay + paypal which unfortunately has the feature hidden away).
With websites constantly getting hacked, and passwords constantly being hijacked - I think its the best way forward. P.S. Amazon allows you to use an app such as Google Authenticator (which I use)... I would suggest everyone uses one too so if ever your phone number "expires", you wont be locked out of your accounts. (eBay/PayPal dont support authenticator apps). |

When your enabling the 2 factor authentication, basically use the same Google Authenticator App on your phone. The app generates a 6 digit code which you enter (in addition to your email/password).
You can use the Google auth app to secure other things too, GMAIL etc. so its nothing new. |

It appears that accounts created within the last couple weeks are also receiving them
My guess is it will be a requirement for all Amazon accounts soon.
If you have the message requiring you to fill out the two-step verification, might as well do it as early as possible and make sure to do it correctly. |

Not everyone is seeing it yet. Just newly created accounts at the moment should see it in the top right corner.
If you click help in the top right and type two step verification, it should open up a page with more information |

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
| Freakzilla | 05-07-2017 10:05 AM | Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification My understanding is you can receive a voice call as well. |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification Yeah I received the request on the majority of my accounts as well
I believe at the moment the only 2 options are SMS text and Authenticator APP |

| Pele3000 | 05-07-2017 02:13 PM | Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification Similar question to Duanbo. My accounts phone # has expired and can no longer be retrieved. Do i need to purchase a new prepaid plan with a new phone # to complete this 2 step verification or can i use the google app method to complete the verification without a phone. |

Thank guys | Once you get the notification to setup two-step verification, you'll be asked to provide a number for SMS text, or to connect an Authenticator App. The original number on the account is not necessary. Just be prepared to either get an active number (and keep it active), or familiarize yourself with one of several Authenticator Apps. I personally use multiple phone #s for all my accounts. |

About Two-Step Verification
Amazon's Two-Step Verification adds an additional layer of security to your account. Instead of simply entering your password, Two-Step Verification requires you to enter a unique security code in addition to your password during sign in.
You'll enter your sign in information like you normally would, but then you'll be prompted to enter a security code. You can receive this security code in a variety of ways depending on the option you select during sign up, including text message, voice call, or authenticator app.
To simplify sign-in on computers and devices that you routinely use, you can tell us not to ask for a security code so that you won't need to enter a code each time you sign in. Afterward, that computer or device will only ask for your password when you sign in.
If you need help from Customer Service after enabling Two-Step Verification, you'll need provide a security code similar to when trying to sign in to your account. |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification Good find! Looks like UK Amazon has 1 extra option: UK Amazon has SMS (text message), Voice call, or Authenticator APP
USA Amazon has SMS (text message) or Authenticator APP |

Can i use my phone number for multiple accounts or do i have to have a phone number for each account separate?

Thanks buddy! | Dude this is basic stuff. The same phone number will link you. Everything has to be different. |

Ok this is what i thought! I just wanted to make sure |
| DuSpast | 05-08-2017 06:57 AM | Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification Also you add your number and then they want to have another number for backing up, what has to be different from the first number. |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification That is correct. |
| munkron | 05-08-2017 12:56 PM | Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification any way to use 1 phone for multiple amazon accounts with the authenticator app or is that not possible? |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification Personally I use phone #s for all my accounts, via SMS
Using the same Authenticator App on multiple accounts should be tested/researched before jumping in. Just in case there is a way they can link multiple accounts with it.
Since this two-step verification is relatively new on amazon, I don't think we will hear much about people using Authenticator Apps for multiple amazon accounts quite yet.
For now the safest bet would be to get yourself some phone #s and keeping them active. |
| Pele3000 | 05-09-2017 09:37 AM | Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification So you have 2 phone numbers per account? Since they ask for a back up # ? |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification Correct if you want a back up.
If you don't, you could probably make one up. But realize the risk. |

There is no way amazon can link you if this is used multiple times as the app only provides a unique number to the 'code' given
So on each account - 1 new number from a mobile phone and the win auth app should do the trick |
| dodya | 05-09-2017 11:37 PM | Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification one of my stealth accounts is over a year old and there is no notification or emails stating I need to set up 2 step verification |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification i have received this message more than 1 month ago, seems UK accounts are not forced to do it, i just ignored that message and everything is fine. ( my account is more than 1 year old) |
| MikeRock | 05-10-2017 09:11 AM | Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification Ill add another thing to this thread i found out yesterday.
If you have 2 step authenticity on your account. Even when you call into amazon they can not get into the account without sending a code to your phone and you telling them the code over the phone.
Was adding information to an a-z claim made against me by some scammer and called into amazon to explain my side of the story. Customer service send a code to my phone and asked me for the code to get access to account information.
Just a heads up if you guys are using google voice or disposable phone numbers. |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification If you are using VMs I would suggest a copy of WInAuth in each VM you use and keeping a copy of the secret key given by amazon so you can add extra authentication apps later if you need to. The Time-based One-time Password Algorithm (TOTP) used doesn't need to connect to Amazon.
If you don't have access to the number in your seller account you can add a new mobile number just for 2FA use (will be verified by SMS/Voice) as a back up.
This is on amazon.co.uk, otehr sites may have different rules. |
| guitarca18 | 05-10-2017 08:04 PM | Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification Got this on an account over a year old so I started the process but realized I didn't have a second google voice number so I stopped at the backup. Pretty insane they want two phone numbers. Do normal people even have two phone numbers anymore?
Also reading through the documentation I found this:
"Simplifying your login
To simplify login on computers and devices that you routinely use, you can tell us not to ask for a security code so that you won't need to enter a code each time you sign in. Afterward, that computer or device will only ask for your password when you sign in."
Where do we do this and does this violate their process if we received the notice? |

Ok if i would use the Google Authenticator App on my phone and on a separate phone this can not be linked in any way right?
Also how about to get a Skype number?
Also i ready that it will be required to all Amazon.com account by June 30, 2017. :tears: |
Re: Amazon "New" Two-Step-Verification You can use google authenticator APP without an internet connection
So it seems a link would not be possible, although personally have never used an athenticstor on multiple accounts. |

Sure everything is fine now, but you might have a nasty surprise on the 1st July.
Ignoring that message would be very risky.
There is no downside that I can see, and for most people if you white list the device/computer/VM you use the most you will probably only need the 2FA when calling Amazon or using a new computer. |
