I used a gift card for an order but now the amount of the gift card is listed as "balance hold". Has anybody else ever had this happen? What does it mean?

anybody? I have no access to the funds on the gift card now and customer support is not emailing back. when I check my gift card account, it just says 'balance hold'.
It is a $50 Amazon gift card that I tried to order some books with. The books are quite common so I don't think they would be out of stock but my entire gift card balance says 'balance hold'. It has been like that for weeks now
I had this happen once when I bought a amazon gift card from someone else turns out the payment failed so the card was no good so balance hold means the gift card is no good
