No one is saying anything about scamming somone. I think the other posters are just pointing out that its very difficult to venture out into the e commerce marketplace on your own.
You will need:
1. A well running website. You cannot just use a template you will have to pay someone to design it for you.
2. Merchant account. You will get the worst terms out there because you are a new business. You will have to pay for chargebacks unlike on amazon or paypal.
3. Legal structure. Better incorporate or establish an llc. You should speak to an attorney for optimal asset protection.
4. Fulfillment. Your UPS,FEDEX rates will be horrific. It takes volume to get the best pricing which you won't have. You cannot charge your customer full price because the bigger guys can do it for less and are a known entity.
5. Loyalty. You have none. As a consumer, the devil I know is better than the one I don't. Meaning, I know the pros/cons of amazon and are okay with them. The only way you can get me to switch is if you can beat them on price. You cannot challenge them on service because, I THINK your product does not require any post sale service.
6. Marketing. Driving traffic to your site is not as easy as just creating a domain name. Expect to pay money per click.
The reason I like amazon is because they do everything for me. They have:
Traffic
Marketing
Brand recognition
FBA
Cheap shipping
storage
customer service
loyalty
I think you should continue to sell on ebay/amazon AND create your own site. You can even use amazon checkout to create a sense of trust for the buyer and minimize fraud/chargebacks.
Goodluck.
