how quickly will you be banned if you accidentally link your account?
I was taking my computer into another room and lost signal with my tether from my phone. When I opened the screen up it was using my wifi from the house (previously banned on) instead. I didn't click on anything and x'ed out of amazon. Tethered back and signed out after bringing a new box up. How quickly will I lose this account.. if that is enough to close this account down?

You connected to your Internet and did not load any new pages or refresh the page? If that's the case then your IP address was not recorded. As long as you switched to the correct network without navigating any pages on Amazon you're fine.

Of course, Aspkin is correct. And sometimes, even if you accidently do this, it does not ALWAYS result in the account being closed, although you want to avoid that.
ALWAYS have a backup account!

Why don't you get your IP changed at your home, then no need to worry in the future. I guess you must have a Static IP and not dynamic. Just call your provider and say your bank is having problems with the IP they have provided.

Re: how quickly will you be banned if you accidentally link your account?
my advice for those that cell phone tether
make your computer "forget" your wifi network so if it does try to connect it asks you for your password
turn off your computers wifi
do the same 2 things as above with your cell phone
then connect your cell phone for tethering
reason i say this is I had a similar issue as you. My cell phone restarted without my knowledge while tethered. It then automatically connected to my SAVED home wifi network so I was tethered to my cell phone but though my home wifi network instead of my cell phone provider. Close call.
Re: how quickly will you be banned if you accidentally link your account?
I think amazon or ebay don't always track your IP when you suffer their website. They will track your IP address every time you log in , submit an order and open their website first time. When you logged in , they have your cookies and session, and will not track your IP until your session has expired and need to log in again. So may be your account will safe.
About your Static IP address, you can contact your ISP , tell them that you have an website running with this IP, some one hacked your website and your home server, using it for spam email. Now you can't event send an email or search from google because your IP has blacklist and you need a new IP ip address for everything run smooth. Good luck.

QUICK.
I accidentally linked an aged high volume amazon seller account with a new account. A week later, Amazon called me asking me what I was selling and why I had two accounts. My new account was selling risky things and they didn't like that. Banned me instantly.
