Aussies: What do you guys use for phone verification?

Skype is quite expensive especially when you have a fair few accounts.

LilyPily 02-03-2013 07:46 AM

Get Telstra pre-paid SIM for $2 (no id required at certain Coles or Woolies). Pop the SIM into an old mobile phone you don't use. Activate the SIM card. Use the number for phone verification. If you are a high volume user, then call forward this number to your real mobile phone number (you will need to pop some money into the pre-paid SIM for call forwarding). Otherwise set and forget.

Toolman89 02-03-2013 08:24 AM

Seen you post that in another thread but don't you have to have documents to activate/verify it online?

drphilly 02-03-2013 04:45 PM

same details as stealth is fine ;)

LilyPily 02-04-2013 05:33 AM

Nope. It's pre-paid, not contract. Go to Coles, buy a $2 SIM card, pop it into a mobile phone, enter the mobile phone number on the packet on ebay. Works fine. Ebay call your mobile, automated system give you a PIN #. I would not post if it didn't work.

GreenBean 02-04-2013 05:56 AM

Any info on the glitches with getting the pin then from ebay?

Epic fail with 4 attempts.

Mobile should not be the issue as it's less than 5 months old.

:pout:

LilyPily 02-04-2013 06:10 AM

I've had only one glitch with ebay's phone verification with Telstra pre-paid mobile SIM card when they didn't issue me with a PIN over the mobile, so I requested a PIN via email instead. It's a hit and miss (as with all ebay procedures). If it fails, you can get PIN verification via email. I have done that before and it has worked. I know it does fail sometimes, when it has I have waited another 24 hours to re-try phone verification via mobile otherwise too many attempts within a short period will lock you out.

Thanks I'll give it a try. Do Coles/Woolworths have a form to fill out or anything so I'd have to have my stealth details memorised and ready? Or you just buy it and walk out?

LilyPily 02-04-2013 04:03 PM

I've posted this information on previous threads, it depends on which state you live in. In Melbourne, they sell these $2 SIM cards at Coles or Woolworths in the magazine aisle - no ID required (just like buying fruit they scan it and you just pay!). Other states or places you need to provide ID and it is kept behind the counter etc. Just shop around. $2 pre-paid SIM from Telstra (Vodafone etc sell it too but doesn't allow you to "call forward" their number). Go check out Australia Post as well grab your Telstra SIM and pre-paid Load & Go card at the same time!

GreenBean 02-04-2013 04:18 PM

First time I ever read the above info of the states

LilyPily 02-04-2013 08:03 PM

check this thread: " New stealth mobile sim cards? "

drphilly 02-04-2013 09:11 PM

Go to a small phone store. They usually don't ask for ID.

Toolman89 02-04-2013 09:48 PM

Tried at 3 places, all asked for ID. Anybody else use something different besides Skype or a prepaid sim here?

ID has always been a problem for me
Sorry I use Skype.

:peace:

drphilly 02-05-2013 01:48 AM

you can provide ID, then just add the number to the stealth account.

your phone details don't have to match stealth account details.

Are you 100% sure about this? I was under the impression that eBay/Paypal can check your name and address details that your mobile number is registered to.

drphilly 02-05-2013 03:22 AM

Wouldn't this depend on if you register your number as private or public?? Name maybe, but not sure about checking your address though.

Does anyone else have any input??

cougar2004 02-11-2013 05:45 AM

711 is the best place to buy the $2 sim cards. Ive bought 6 in the last month, havent been asked for ID once. The usual indian/asian students/working visa peeps that are usually working their either dont know about asking for ID, or simply dont care enough to bother!

LilyPily 02-11-2013 06:24 AM

Well Done Everyone!

Thats a bit much for eB/pp - I wouldnt worry - people do move all the time

LilyPily 03-16-2013 04:38 AM

I opened up another stealth account just last night. I didn't get PIN code via my pre-paid $2 sim card mobile number, instead they sent the code to me directly via my email. Not sure though, whether ebay may chop and change new accounts procedure in future (i.e. phone verification or email verification).

a.v.limited 04-11-2013 12:48 PM

there are many phone forwarding companies around

willy0121 04-14-2013 03:21 PM

Specify website

Can you specify any website which provide that service?

munchkinxx 06-22-2013 02:32 AM

I thought creating Ebay new accounts needed a landline number? Little confused why these mobile phone numbers are working.

LilyPily 06-22-2013 04:29 AM

No you don't need a landline number.

Ok thanks!

munchkinxx 06-26-2013 10:05 PM

Can someone please confirm whether the name on Ebay and the sim HAS to be in the same name? TIA!

It does not need to be the same.

(Thank heavens ;))

Rule of thumb:

ebay/paypal information must match for stealth.

rsot 06-27-2013 10:31 AM

Sim never needs to be in the same name of the eBay account - applies to ALL eB platforms

LilyPily 06-27-2013 08:09 PM

I've been buying $2 pre-paid Telstra SIMs at Australia Post and Coles and haven't yet been asked for ID.

munchkinxx 06-27-2013 11:39 PM

How are sellers activating the Telstra $2 sims? I'm currently in the process of activating online however it's asking for some sort of ID as the user is a new customer. How do I get around this?

LilyPily 06-28-2013 01:16 AM

Just pop the SIM in a mobile phone, make sure it's not a dead SIM (this happens sometimes). Enter the phone in on eBay and when you're right to sell eBay will "call" you and leave a 4 digit message as your PIN and you're right to go. Otherwise PM me.

Stealth4 06-29-2013 09:21 AM

I just activated an optus one and it didn't ask me for ID. Just put all the stealth info :)

Just one question. I checked the balance and it says service will expire on the 06/07/2013

So I am thinking if you don't recharge within 7days then the sim will expire. I don't start selling on new accounts in 7days and most of my accounts are at least 2months old before I list anything.

So do I buy a sim when creating the account new add the number, recharge or just make up a number on the sign up page then later buy and activate sim when changing the account to seller?

I think it will be too expensive to recharge each sim

LilyPily 06-30-2013 01:25 AM

Next time when you buy a SIM make sure it has a longer expiry date. Unsure of this one, I normally don't re-charge on pre-paid SIM (cost too much). I just use the mobile number to obtain the PIN so I can start selling online.

Making up a number is not wise. Number could belong to another person. ebay may call at any time

Keeping a phone active is part of the cost of business

I think that is how it works with optus. If you don't recharge within 7 days then your service ends. So what number do you put on sign up page because I wait much longer than 7 days to convert the account to seller

rsot 07-02-2013 12:25 PM

7 days wow - that is such a short timeframe...literally a cash grab

Stealth4 08-02-2013 08:32 PM

Same with my local woolworths

I used to get them at a chinese store nearby (family owned) that don't ask for ID but they are closed on weekends so it can be inconvenient.

I just decided to buy them online. $1 on voda site with free shipping. ;)

You can enter your shipping details to be different than the account registration details Although technically it would still leave a paper trail on which sim cards were sent to your home address.

I don't think leaving a paper trail is a problem though because it's not used for illegal use.
