| | Was on a list of things to ask... Should have done this a long time ago but I want to discuss this:
As fellow Canadians should know, when you send out a 1 kg+ package to the USA via Canada Post, you are forced to use Expedited shipping which runs between 18-22 dollars on average.
Any of you have suggestions on cheaper ways of shipping 1 kg+ packages? We don't have a first class mail option on those =( |
| GreenBean | 06-06-2011 06:45 PM | Nice, NOT.
rsot is one of the VERY first users to help others here.
38 users have 'looked' at this thread.
Not one bothered to even say I dont know. |
| Imakemoney | 06-06-2011 06:47 PM | I dont know...haha
Come on Canadians give him a hand here.... |
| GrannyT | 06-07-2011 06:42 AM | I don't know RSOT
(sorry 'GB'):pop2: |
| GreenBean | 06-07-2011 06:51 AM | I wanted to suggest to send the parcel in split weights.
Then I decided that might just not work ;) Cost could be the same? Dunno . |
Ha - love you guys - GB aside, these frequently posting UKers have been a pleasure to see as of lately =)
That aside, can't really split the packages since these 1 kg stuff is often sealed together or just of itself.
Even the split weight sux here in Canada - for example if an item is between 500 g and 1 kg, to ship via first class is still going to be about 15 by air, 13 by surface. Ah well.
I have yet to explore DHL, FedEx or UPS options but I am sure they are not better. |
Ok I'll keep my thread alive for lack of anything going on in this subforum ha.
1 kg+ package costs to states:
Sadly, you can't send this by ground or regular air and that's why the cost is so high.
Canada Post: expedited 3-5 business days 18-23 depending on area in USA.
Other options: FedEx - minimal cost is about 24ish; UPS same. I did not look at what an account with them will save - maybe someone else in Canada who ships to USA with 1 kg+ packages can notify whether worth it to get an account with FedEx or UPS?
Think Purolator is same kind of high price. |
| GrannyT | 06-09-2011 09:44 AM | I don't know RSOT
(I'm not falling foul of that GB again - she bites!!!)
:pop2: |
When you're hard on the liquor GTran and high on your horses, you are useless =P |
| GrannyT | 06-09-2011 11:17 AM | LOL - But I'm neither right now Lumberjack?:D |
| Imakemoney | 06-09-2011 12:12 PM | it appears you have no fellow Candians to assist you rsot :mad2: |
| GrannyT | 06-09-2011 12:16 PM | That's why he relys on us Brits - damn colonials!! |
Men I ain't surprised ha about lack of Canadian input.
But you UKers do keep company all good - new company too =) keep up the solid antics. |
| GrannyT | 06-09-2011 12:36 PM | It's no good you sweet talking us now Lumberjack - we're ganging up on you - You've got the ShadyOne, Imake$, GT and a whole host of others to contend with.
I still can't solve your postage problem though:D |
Ha no worries I got plans for the bunch of you...:suspicious: |
| GrannyT | 06-09-2011 12:42 PM | :eek::eek::eek::eek: |
| ShadyOne | 06-09-2011 04:58 PM | Everytime GT mentions me in a post, the bat signal shines outside my window. |
| Burning | 06-10-2011 12:18 AM | I use Canada expedited mail to USA, and print the label via paypal as they provide a 25% discount. A package costs $13 - $15 for me to ship, since all of them are under 400 grams. I have used Fedex before but it's only good when you have to ship heavy items. Fedex penny and nickle you for every delivery, including a $2.50 residential fee + $5 rural fee. It adds up depending on the delivery, do not just assume by looking at the base rate. UPS is also another option if you are a powerseller, as they are currently providing 50% off...
Canadapost is the only viable, cheapest and more convenient way to currently ship. With the recent protest, it has caused me to think this twice, but could not come up with the better solution. Unions have caused immense amount of problems for Canadapost,,,,,,,,,,,,,, |
Thanks Burning - yeah the under 500 grams isn't so bad - it's when I hit 1 Kg+ packages and I am FORCED by Canada Post to use expedited shipping that it sucks. Especially when folx from US don't want to pay 20+$ for shipping ugh. |
| Burning | 06-10-2011 02:32 PM | Another option for you is to use a fulfillment center such as Ship Wire. Are you a powerseller...check out UPS.... |
| techbayelectronics | 06-10-2011 02:40 PM | Good luck Rsot (:! May all your problems be fixed! |
Interesting concept Burning - yes have Ps account, will look at UPS.
Edit: Ship Wire does not operate in my city ha |
| Imakemoney | 06-10-2011 03:38 PM | Canada has more than one city? :P |
Get lost Imake$ - go play in traffic or something =P |
| Imakemoney | 06-10-2011 03:57 PM | haha thats my plan tommorow :D |
| Burning | 06-10-2011 09:26 PM | The WHOLE point of Shipwire was to save shipping costs by sending it to there USA fulfillment center. Another good place is SHIPITTO......... |
| koharski | 06-14-2011 06:11 PM | Once you ship 45 packages with canada post over a 30 day period you can call them and get a 15% discount, it isn't much but it certainly helps.
I have also found that if you put the weight in as say.. .95 and drop it off NOT at a regular canada post location, but one of the "on site" locations that have at london drugs and occasionally 7-11s they usually let it slip. Of course will only work if you package is very close to 1kg as much more then 20% error and they send it back to you. |
I hear you koharski - my package outweight 1 kg by more than 20% so it sux at times.
And now with the Canada Post strike - it's hell. Have to e-mail buyers and explain the situation.
IF I had time, I would just wait for shipping to hit 20 packages and drive to the US. Ah well. |
| koharski | 06-15-2011 02:43 PM | yeah.. the canada post lockout is such a pain! I have 15 packages there waiting to go out.. have to figure out what I am going to tell the customers now.
Try DHL. Don't book with them straight up, call them up and say you would like to open an account. Have a sales rep call you back. They will usually match rates. |
The Canada Post lockout should pass momentarily I am hoping. |
| Burning | 06-16-2011 11:44 PM | FML, had 4 packaged which were supposed to go out on Tuesday. Later realized that Canadapost were on a lockout and were no longer accepting packaged. Canadapost is the only option when shipping internationally..since I send regularly to the UK. |
And double sux - dhl or ups do not deliver standard mail to po boxes - i have letters that go to the US too ugh. |
| Shadowmoe7 | 06-24-2011 10:38 PM | why is it some much to ship from and to canada -___- |
It`s just the way it is Shadow =( Factor in gas and time and whatever - definitely overcharge but they set the rules - government corporation =( |
| Burning | 06-26-2011 09:44 PM | It's been a historic day in Canada. After a prolonged and unnecessary debate in parliament, Canadapost will now be going back to work on Tuesday.
We can now resume our ebay operations. Thanks Canadapost for screwing us Canadians out again! |
Right on - golfclap for tomorrow restarting on our overpriced service.
2 weeks of this - going to be hell at the post office.
On a sidenote, had to pick up a registered letter at Purolator office on weekend - their rates are so sick to Canada, States, or abroad. Fug that.
Best rate quote: I had a book to send to Australia - only service offered....express shipping $120 - no more, no less |
| Burning | 06-27-2011 08:54 PM | I had a couple of packages I was unable to drop off since they locked down Canadapost. I had to refund most customers who placed an order. Even though I printed the shipping label a couple of weeks back, I have not been able to cancel them. They stole my $25 in shipping charges, even though I never even sent out the package. There thieves I tell you! It's not even worth my time calling, No one is EVER on the line, and it takes 30 minutes to reach someone. Canadapost FAIL!!!! I hope it gets privatized. |
Yeah I wish it would get privatized.
The service is back on now - finally - but what a joke.
Though I respect their service, regardless of failures, few employees I have met...i mean really? a raise? Seems like they can't be hired for anything else given their attitude and knowledge. |
| ghostboy | 06-30-2011 07:38 PM | I dont know if this would work in your situation but, I have sold an item without the packaging and stated in the auction that if you want the original packaging there is an extra shipping charge. By doing that i was able to send it by usps first class which has a cut off of 13ozs. | | All times are GMT -5. The time now is 07:37 PM. | |
