Scotiabank called me stating i opened too many savings account...

Scotiabank most annoying bank in canada.

Anyways i have more than 5 savings account opened. The lady called me, and told me why i have more than 5 savings account with the same type of features.

I just told her i am using them, and there will be money in the account. So no need to delete them, or worry about it.

She said she will go speak to her manager and just hung up on me.

Is there going to be any problems in the future with this bank? (like delete it without my permission/notice?)

I have rbc, bmo, and cibc, and they never cared.

Scotiabank - any bank for example - may frown upon it but really not such a big deal. You may have a manager calling you back saying that you should close a few but only time will tell.

How is BMO? Have not used their services in a long time - RBC caused me problems in the past so I dont enjoy them.

Will I have to comply with the manager if he/she tells me if i "should" close any?

Never had a problem with BMO. Easy to open accounts and close them. Lots of times they waived overdraft fees.

Well if the manager wants more info and is not happy with your answers, she/he could push your account to Security.
but, in my opinion, you prob just got a naive agent who was freaked out - did not know what to do. Time will tell.

With BMO, you open and close your accounts all online?

I opened all online and called in whenever i needed to close an account.

I don't think the problem is having 5 saving accounts, it's that they are not active with cash. That's my guess but then again I ain't Canadian.

rsot 03-07-2012 10:44 AM

That's right - not active.

rsot 03-07-2012 10:44 AM

@Darwin, initially you went in to open the first right? As in branch presentation.

Yeah i had to go in to open up my first account with them. Or you could wait like 2 weeks and do it through the mail.

Definitely one of my most preferred banks. You can open an account online and use it in less than a minute.

Also OP, even though we are in Canada and the banks here treats their customers better than the ones in the States, it's still better to follow their gaming rules just to be fair, which is to not have over ~5 active accounts at a time with one bank, and don't close more than 3 accounts per year (imo).

rsot 03-07-2012 04:27 PM

Might go back to work with BMO accounts then - one of the few banks that I have neglected to use. RBC too but that was because they caused me headaches.

I have been using TD Canada Trust and so far I have had no issues but I am pretty sure like with any bank, if you go over the limit by opening too many checking/savings accounts, you will get flagged.

rsot 03-07-2012 04:38 PM

TD is nice

Their fees aren't LOL! :)

baloch 03-07-2012 09:42 PM

did anybody try cibc as I was thinking of opening a account there tommorrow.

I hate canadian banks cause most close at around 3pm which is nuts. I was wondered growing up when people do their banking as they are working from 9 to 5 and when they come home the banks are closed.

rsot 03-08-2012 10:41 AM

I used CIBC all the time - very easy, accepts deposits in different names without a problem - just don't do frequent deposits (i.e. everyday) into a personal account.

For banking hours, TD is very good - h*ll, lot of TD branches are open on Sundays too.

MM78 03-09-2012 12:47 AM

Canadians really take their banking serious to open on Sunday.

baloch 03-10-2012 04:11 PM

yea but opening on sunday's has made TD the top bank in canada in for 2011 passing RBC for the first time in a decade.

@rsot thanks will be doing deposit twice a month

rsot 03-14-2012 07:50 PM

All good - yeah I like the flexibility of inhouse banking hours with TD.

Wait until you see what some of the banks are putting on their window at certain downtown cities...

Maybe the tone is not translating well here, but were you short and annoyed with her? Banking is not a right, its a privilege. And there are rules and laws involved. So telling her to just never mind is not the way to go. [Again, you may have been friendly, I have no way to tell here]

You need to maintain a friendly tone with these folks. Its not that great a job and pays pretty crappy. So pretty easy to get them cranky. Its not at all normal to have a bunch of accounts. So if they have questions you need to respond to them

You can tell them you sell online and have various accounts on various sites. You like to maintain separate accounts for each to stay better organized. Even at the expense of extra fees.

That will usually be more then enough to end the issue
