Not sure how it works in Canada... USPS makes you sign a piece of paper before they'll give you the package with delivery confirmation with signature. I'm sure CA has a similar system.
What if the receiver has nothing to sign? UPS, Fedex, or whoever could just leave it at his door? I don't know how it works in the US. Obviously it depends on the size of the item too.
I got a package a while ago from a warranty return and they left it at my door. Nothing to sign - $200 item just sitting there at my apartment door.
Does asking for the receiver to sign a signature cost extra?
I have never shipped anything UPS or Fedex but I have received stuff from them, sometimes you sign other times they just leave at the front door. I guess they only need a signature they what kind of shipping service you buy.
If someone can add anything about UPS or Fedex, you can.

when i SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED , IT WILL NOT BE LEFT AT YOUR DOOR. the only thing left is a note saying you missed your package we'll try tomm. If you keep missing your package it will be held at the post office for you to come pick up in person with your ID ready.

yes it costs extra.
how much extra we are talking? Might be worth doing on my first sale!
well here I would deal with Canada post. So I sign my signature before shipping off which proves I sent it right?
I print my shipping labels with Canada Post through eBay/Paypal for each order. There is an option near the bottom of the first page (when filling out the weight, value, etc) that says 'signature required'. You check the box if you want the receiver to sign for the package. It will then only be delivered when the receiver is home to accept and sign for it. I think it costs an adidtional $1.50. It's well worth it for expensive items.
