If you're talking about eBay, yes it's worth it. It's almost mandatory now if you want your listing to do well. You just have to factor in the cost in your listing price.

If you're talking about amazon or some other platform,

How much are you spending depends on a listing or how it goes

I usually set it to 10%. So for an item I would have charged $20 for, I up the price to $22. Then if I get a sale that's not through promoted listings I make an extra $2.

Ebay will say "most sellers are giving us 18%" (in their suggested promotion rate) but I think they're lying.

Yeah, you can go as low as you want. But in my experience the promotions aren't very effective unless you give eBay at least 10%.

Jesus! That the highest trending rate I've heard of! For most of my categories, it's 3-4%.

How well do you rank with 10% in your category? Top 5, I hope?

I agree with everyone else. I usually run about 10%. It definitely helps tremendously

It's a toss up. Sometimes my listing will shoot straight to the top, other times the listing will never get more than 1 sale every couple days.

So, the placement of the same listing varies by day(roughly)?

No they're pretty stationary. The listing will either take off shortly after being published, or the listing will never do very well.

Ohhhh, gotcha. I've been meaning to experiment with different methods, and find out the secret. Just haven't gotten around to it.

I put a listing on 40% the other day and was giving them like 100 bucks of the profit(guranteed way more than the competition), and it was getting ZERO views. So there's definitely more to it that them amount they can make, contrary to what I initially thought.

I think top rated plus, speed of shipping, return rate, etc all play a role

I'm 100% in the good on all those things. It was getting views until I upped the % so much. Then I changed it to 0% and started getting views again. Could have just been a glitch, so I'll have to investigate further.

For sure!

I'm surprised someone AT ebay didn't buy it, as much as I was giving away.

How does one create a Sponsored Listing? And, do sponsored listings always appear on the top of the search results?

No. In super-saturated categories, there are generally 5 "sponsored" listings at the top. And then a few more scattered throughout the middle. And then some more at the very bottom.

^^^ That is while viewing 200 listings per page on a PC. No clue how it works with other arrangements, or on mobile.

If there isn't a lot of competition, you'll sometimes see Organic listing at the top, with sponsored ads below it. Or no sponsored ads at all, for unpopular listings.

So, why should someone pay money for Sponsored Listing in the first place?

And, what's meant by an Organic Listing? I found this answer.
A 'search engine organic listing' refers to the natural or unpaid listing of a website on a search result page. Organic listings are natural listings of web pages that Google has crawled, and deemed valuable for the search term. The more informative and valuable the page around a key term, the higher it is ranked.

Then you just found the answer to that question.

Why should you pay? Maybe because if there are 10,000 results when you type your keyword in for your product, and your item is on page 23. No one is ever going to see that. With sponsored listings, you have a chance, depending on the % you set it at, and other things.
