I have decided to make my first purchase on alibaba. The supplier accepts escrow so that is what I will use.

The first order will be sent by air and I will be paying much more than the original price quoted for this service.

The supplier will create my goods from scratch so it could be 2-4 weeks before I is sent.

Is escrow like PayPal? How should I go about using it to get the most protection?

Use a credit card to fund it. Can issue a charge back if problems occur. Why are you accepting that you will have to pay a lot more than quoted? I would not be happy if my supply did this.

Because my first quote was by sea. The added funds is because its being sent by air. The supplier is paying $50 towards it and they think I will be refunded a little more because they hunk it may cost less than quoted.

If I pay by escrow I am totally covered right?

Exactly - your credit card will serve as a nice blanket in the event of problems.

Escrow my ass I've had countless problems with DHGate trying to get refunds and never been successful. Buyer sent 1 box instead of 4, received it then claimed didn't receive the rest. DHGATE decided in sellers favour as they thought the $1000 purchase was in the 1 box alone. Awful service. Problems with purchasing from tese countries

I don't have experience with using escrow but have close friends who were scammed out of thousands , so make sure you use a CC so that you can make a charge back in case all else fails
