LawEnforcement@ebay??

Received an out of the blue suspension MC999 along with an email from 'lawenforcement' at ebay[dot]com asking for ID, bank statement, proof of ownership.

We have a legitimate pawn business, but when I signed up 10 years ago I used an alias because, privacy, and didn't think anything of it.

Was planning on just doctoring up utility bill etc. but got to thinking that maybe this is more than just an ID check since it came from 'lawenforcement@ebay' and not regular customer service or trust and safety. there wasn't even an SR# in the email he sent me.

Anyone ever got emails from this address ?

All I can think of is that either someone with a similar name as me did something illegal and my account got caught up in it, or something I listed was reported stolen without my knowledge and they got a request from LE

If this really does have something to do with LE, I want to make sure I clear my name, legally, and that probably won't involve sending eBay my real bank statements.. I will deal with eBay later, stealth if I have to.

I'm debating between 1) cut & run, create stealth, 2) send my real info since I have nothing to hide, or 3) send them some info while trying to get info out of them about what's going on

i would not send anything till you know who and what your dealing with . What did you sell.. Yea stolen goods are BAD deal did they buy a item from you to prove its stolen or going off your pics ?

yea if they had a @eb email address then not good . Hope you keep records of who pawns you the items your selling

Under no circumstances would I even consider sending a bank statement or other important private information to a faceless, nameless address on the internet, even if it appears to come from EB.

I would insist that the person provide you with their law enforcement credentials via email that you can independently verify before speaking with them.

If it sounds legit and serious, I would make no representations whatsoever over the phone, and depending on what they say, I would consider seeking an attorney's advice.

It's so easy to phake an email address, just go to thunderbird and change a few settings and boom, you got a @ebay.com address.

The more I think about it, the less I think a police officer would email you via EB.

The attached info indicates lawenforcement@ebay is an incoming address used to facilitate police investigations.

If, for example, a San Francisco PD officer was investigating a possible crime, they wouldn't email you from EB, but from a SFPD address, true?

And EB itself has no police authority of any kind.

You've been suspended, so obviously something is going on, but I'm doubting this is actually a real police investigation of any kind, they've somehow twigged to the false name and that's why you're shut down.

yea i know that but i wouldnt send a dam thing till i knew for sure who it was .Then i would make them suponea it . . If you know what item they are asking ownership on . did it sell or still in your hands ?

Maybe its just a scare tactic. So this email is for lawenforcement? How do they keep track of what email goes to who with, just a ballpark, 900,000,000 police officers around the world?

yeah something tell me the police aren't gonna comb through the hundreds of thousands of listing ebay has over something minor (less thank 5k). Unless you know what you did wrong, I wouldn't be losing any sleep over this.

so many red flags with this. if someone was after you, they arent going to send you emails and with such a silly, obvious email addy.

and you are out of your mind if you send legitimate personal information to a ghost who contacted you on the internet.

If its has you worried just call ebay from an untraceable phone... Use your alias I do it everyday... I feel problems should never be delt with through email or text... Face to Face or at least a phone call...

The last MC999 I got was for not paying my eBay payment...

I agree would just call them up and ask what is going on. Would not send any documents until I knew more.

Never heard of such a thing. Since you are banned anyway just ditch the account & move on as there isn't anything else they can do other than ban you.

There seems to be a lot of posts saying it may be a spoofed email. Whilst this is true, it is very unlikely in your case because your were suspended and an email from law enforcement followed right after.

I would call ebay to gather more information as to why you were suspended - as you say, you had nothing to hide. Failure to do so could just lead the law enforcement to dig further and further until they find you - depending on how much they want to find you.

They didn't get an email from law enforcement, they got an email from a 'law enforcement@ebay" address, which is supposedly a hotline for police to email in and ask questions about eb listings.

Eb has no law enforcement power.

And he has something to hide, he's not using his own real name.
