I have had the same problem. It seems to me that what triggers it is not providing a secondary email account.

Am I wrong?

If so you can easily provide a secondary email account with stealth information.

Gmail is by far the safest email provider to use for stealth accounts. So we need to continue to use them if at all possible.

Just wanted to say it started happening here in Australia too. Never happened to me before this..

Yeah - dungeon digging - well at least +1 for forum searching...I have seen many gmails of mine asking for cell phone to get a text.

Yeah, this is different to that screen that nags you for a mobile no, which you can click out of.

What's happening now is you can't actually complete registration for a new gmail account without giving them a mobile number. They say that each mobile number can only have a limited number of gmail accounts attached to it (didn't say how many). Its pretty much the same thing discussed on this old thread, but we've never had this issue in Australia before.

I had to join yahoo instead:(

PS. I tried adding secondary email account, and they still demanded the mobile number.
