GMAIL now requiring mobile phone to signup!

Ok so I'm doing my usual thing to create more stealth accounts and when I go to signup a new Gmail account they now require a mobile phone with text messaging so they can send you an activation code. Well sh!t, I don't have a mobile phone. Also I read that they will keep your # on file and limit the amount of Gmail accounts you can have. This sucks... what's another good alternative to Gmail? I need POP and would prefer images disabled by default or at least an option to.

doughboykilla 06-23-2009 11:01 PM

Yeah gmail is becomeing pethic! i would never give any email provieder my cell phone # just so i can get a account that is stupid and my money bets they sale those #s to 3rd party telemarkerters.

successsor 06-23-2009 11:43 PM

yesterday i register 2 gmail account using one mobile number. hahaha...

lakeman 06-24-2009 12:01 AM

I just registered a gmail account 2 minutes ago and was not asked for a mobile number??? Where is it asking you this?

TGMT² 06-24-2009 12:06 AM

^^^^^^

I just checked also and easily got a new email without any phone verification, maybe a new measure for non U.S. email accounts?

lakeman 06-24-2009 12:12 AM

That's what I figured but Doughboykilla replied like it happened to him to, so I was confused. Doughboy, did it ask you for a mobile number also?

doughboykilla 06-24-2009 12:18 AM

yeah it did today some times it dose and sometimes it dont i dont know what trigers it as i change ips and clear cookies.

just tried it again and it worked. next time it dose it i will get a screen shot of it and post it here.

lakeman 06-24-2009 12:23 AM

Hmm.. Maybe they are trying to stop people from registering multiple accounts? jtaverner76, had you cleared your cookies, flash cookies, and changed your ip before you tried to create the gmail account?

Yahoo is trying to do the same thing now....I have to keep closing the window. It says they want my mobile number in case I loose my account info....This is not a new accounts this is on yahoo accounts that are a 1yr plus old. This just started happening about a month ago I would say.

What the hell is going on with everything....it's like it's not ebay anymore.

JamesYaBaoy 06-24-2009 12:56 AM

It was only a matter of time..People creating thousands of gmail accounts and selling them and such is definatly not a good thing for google. The service was DEFINATLY being abused.

inverser 06-24-2009 01:08 AM

Very interesting! I wonder if it has anything to do with this: Google Grabs 1 Million Phone Numbers for Google Voice - Business Center - PC World

Google Voice is going to be launched pretty soon. Perhaps Google is just testing code before implementing it universally.

Stealthyman 06-24-2009 01:15 AM

That Google Voice service is amazing. I've been using it in beta stage for over a year. The fact that it rings all of your phones at once means I Never miss a call. It has a lot of other really good features too. It should be out in just a few weeks for the general public.:thumb:

Cool story, bro. ;)

trig 06-24-2009 06:21 AM

I have opened 5 new accts in the past 2 days.
2 required phone verification.
Not sure what triggers it.

jtaverner76 06-24-2009 06:28 AM

I tried to signup twice and it asked me both times for a mobile #. This was on a new ip address with a newly created user account so my browser / flash cookies were empty. Perhaps it is a random spot check, or for non US signups (I am in Canada). I will try again later.

I have since then signed up to Hotmail / Live. Seems to be working fine, pop3 is offered. Images load by default and I couldn't find an option to disable image loading so I must check my mail only using my email client with images disabled. That's fine I guess. Anyone have a reason why I shouldn't use Hotmail? It is m$ after all...

GreenBean 06-24-2009 07:26 AM

What did you do about your secondary email? I made another gmail & did not get asked for a mobile Just wondering :peace:

eseller 06-24-2009 09:14 AM

wow that sucks - use AOL instead - its FREE and uses POP and people think that an @AOL is a paid service too so ebayers will give a little more trust

doughboykilla 06-24-2009 09:55 AM

Yahoo to O My Jesus whats going on with these emails. Looks like we might have to resort to useing un popluare pop3 severics.

Penya 06-24-2009 01:55 PM

Every time I sign for gmail from home with cable broadband they don't ask for mobile verification but when I sign from dongle it always asks so I thought it's only for mobile broadband users

That is actually Very True!

I always give more credibility to a AOL email address verses yahoo or gmail.

Stealthyman 06-24-2009 02:37 PM

I have created about 10 new Gmail accounts between last night and today and it didnt ask me to verify with # even once? Who knows?

Penya 06-25-2009 04:04 PM

jtaverner76 what kind of internet connection do you use? As much as I understand here in UK gmail asks phone verification if you are using dongle/mobile internet

GreenBean 06-25-2009 09:29 PM

^^^Wonder why? I got the 'contact' to make x3 new accounts using the Bluberry at different times since the OP. Each one was OK. For second & third accounts used the first new account as the alternative email address
These were all tried on the West coast in CA.:spy:

doughboykilla 06-25-2009 09:46 PM

I will add a 2nd contact email address and see if that fixs it

inverser 06-25-2009 10:41 PM

Use a proxy located in a different country to get around it.

Stealthyman 06-26-2009 01:29 AM

The last few days I set up about 10 gmails without having to verify using sms from a phone, but today I got asked.

I tried inviting myself but that didnt work. Still got asked.

Then I put in my googlevoice # (over 1 million #'s soon to be released ) and it sent the sms code and I was able to create the account .

So that might be the trick -- when googlevoice is released in a few weeks???

oompaloompa 06-26-2009 07:36 AM

Ive had no probs with gmail, if you want one I can sign one up and you can change password after

oompaloompa 06-26-2009 07:43 AM

have you tried creating a gmail account but saying you are in non US country?

is aol or any other service have same stealth qualities as gmail, I mean not giving ip address away etc, otherwise i wouldnt use it, in case of linking, especially with multiple accounts and buyer questions etc?

limitthis 06-26-2009 02:41 PM

Created one on Tuesday 6-23-09 on east coast and no cell number needed. Used Yahoo for secondary e-mail. Yahoo acct. has 3 diff users as well. Thought I could help to see if it is in a certain region of the country.

Jonas 06-26-2009 10:20 PM

inbox.com does the same thing. And they'll even demand to call me if I put Afghanistan as my country.

doughboykilla 06-27-2009 02:08 PM

no u can use aol email for free u dont have to use dial up

idiotbay 07-01-2009 01:02 PM

Well i got the screen as well. Then i created a new account, but i didnt put the country to UK or USA, i put it to india and it worked.

boondoggle 07-01-2009 11:53 PM

Ive tried a few different countries, it doesnt seem to be the country that matters- can't see any pattern, each time im asked for a mobile number I just create a new user ac (or clear all cookies etc) and change ip, then sign up with almost identical information and a mobile isnt required. Strange.

Mrjame 07-02-2009 01:00 AM

You are sign up many many on your computer. so it's request mobile number :D. If with other computer and reset ip you can sign up easily

Gmail Identity Verification!?!?

I have never heard of such, I tried to make a new gmail account and it asks for my cell phone number to send me a text message with a code to enter , in order to verify my identity! Has anyone had this issue??

aspkin 09-25-2009 11:05 AM

Yeah it happens.. they're doing this to try and stop spammers..

ILovePaypalNOT 09-25-2009 11:07 AM

Ok thanks

I thought maybe they had teamed up with ebay & PP

ha ha

waterproof 09-28-2009 03:55 PM

I just signed up for a G-mail account and wasn't asked for phone verification either. Although I did screw up when I entered my First and Last name, I wanted a different name and can't change it.
Does anyone know if I can close the account and begin over or does ALL of the information stay in their system for 90 days??
