Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

I've closed my business account on eBay, my sales collapsed in Jan 2018 and never recovered. I was just going to close the shop and maybe list stuff when eBay offered free listings but the final straw was when I sold a bundle of clothes at wholesale price and despite me carefully listing the waist sizes of the trousers the buyer - who it is obvious can barely speak English let alone write it - started a return because (in his own words) "please i don t like the item because there are more big size in this item pleas" And i don't like the fact that those T***s at ebay think it's ok to have a return has been automatically approved system.

I refuse to sell clothing. Those buyers have to be the worst for returns!

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

it was wholesale 10 pairs of jeans different sizes - the buyer was a complete idiot. She or he was not buying them to wear themselves.

tax season usually = more sales since the majority of people get a refund rather than having to cut a big check.

It's just a mass migration to Amazon you're witnessing.

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

but AMZN does not have antiques and collectibles you find on Ebay.
Etsy is taking some business away from Ebay as well,as shopper are fed up with bad pictures, sloppy description

Also the all around unprofessionalism which has always been common on eBay, I would guess.

Regardless it's clear to see what's happening. eBay is becoming less and less relevant every week as Amazon keeps expanding into new markets.

agent006140 04-07-2019 10:43 AM

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

it does not help when ebay sellers are amzn/ebay arbitragers, when you order from ebay seller and it comes from AMZN,you want to know if you overpay so you pay a visit to AMZN and lo and behold, you did.
so why buy from Ebay when you can join Prime free for 30 days and buy on AMZN

BUT BEFORE you get a refund, you must struggle to file the return and it is a big pain.
with small business, you file a form and try to figure beginning and ending inventory ?
also with the 2018 standard deduction raised, fewer filers are getting a fat refund.

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

Tax Return season means SPIKE in sales if they are bigger ticket items. People who rarely have expendable income all of the sudden have money burning hole in their pocket.

agent006140 04-07-2019 11:06 AM

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

I would not call a tax refund a burning hole in one'spocket.
I recall last hurricane seasons, many need a new roof or roof repair and the insurance company will issue a check for such, some see that check and need it for paying other bills.
some insurers want to see the invoice from the roofman and proof it has been repaired, some do not and the homeowner decides to spend it elsewhere.not that they know it is a poor choice, but they need it badly to pay off some debts-medical,emergency,car repair ,mortgage.
In my area, there are plenty of roofman who would do the roof for the amount you received from the insurance co without you paying the deductible

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

Ebay thinks that its sellers need them. Amazon knows that their sellers need them.
Ebay messed up when they didnt start moving their own products and started biting at the nuts of all its sellers to get them fees.

This is ebays fault. And they are just making it worse for themselves.

I have card from 1998 that are highly collectible. I would touch ebay with a bleach soaked 40 foot poll to sell them on.

A smaller refund with higher deduction? Do you KNOW how taxes even work?

It's less tax due. So, higher refund, or lower payment to IRS.

But business have slowed to a crawl for me on both Etsy and EBay,so I am surprised I even got an order from Bonanza?
It is not just me,I have been active on Ebay since 1996

IRS -
As of end of March,it has issued 6 billions dollars less in tax refund compared to March of last year !

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

This has got to be the worst week or two weeks ever, it's like all buyers left the face of the earth - absolutely nothing sells, aside from one item in 2 weeks. Something is really wrong with this economy, I don't care what the dirtbag politicians say. Recovery this, recovery that - where is it? Things have only gotten steadily worse. Also noticed an uptick in returns for ⊗⊗⊗⊗ reasons. If this keeps up, I don't know how many people can pay even the most basic bills.

murdered_by_ebay 02-19-2025 06:49 PM

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

I don't think there is any recovery , people have less money and force sellers into a race to the bottom , there are some sellers that can afford it and others that can not. I think this pressure will remain long term as I do not see any basis for recovery

Sadly I agree 100%. This is the new normal.

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

it is going to get worse when tariffs kick in on April 2.
Weather is not helping,we are expecting below zero temperature tonight .
Auto and Homeowner insurance are both moving up,makes no difference which state you are in.

murdered_by_ebay 02-19-2025 07:45 PM

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

the main reason is that money is harder to obtain , people are already in debt , interest rates are high but for the normal folks the official interest rates do not even matter because they have additional restrictions with much higher burden

and of course the overall rate of inflation is draining people's wealth. and most importantly there is no way back , trump will end the ukraine war , will not have a problem to give most of ukraine to russia but the damage inflicted by biden admin and their EU puppies is already done and is irreversible

these idiots discredited the western financial system and western currencies so much that an enemy could not have done better. they would deserve to be charged with high treason for this alone

Besides their credit cards, they are using BMPL-buy now pay later.
It is available on Etsy, even WMT accepts it now.
Unlike other nations,Americans do not save, they have their credit cards, they save via Social Security ,but the money aint available until one retires or becomes disabled.
Some things sell on Ebay,I just bought some ink cartridges for my printer, some sellers sell coffee pods past expiration date, they are still good

nowadays manufacturing is not that labor intensive anymore , moving production back would decrease dependence on other countries but it is questionable what will be with wages and employment , the economy today is different from what was 50 years ago

rsot 02-21-2025 09:26 AM

Re: Ebay sales are dead since new year

AI and automated assembly should be cutting out the need for ppl in manufacturing except for QA/QC
