Sudden drop in sales?

Hi everyone,

So today I had a sudden drop in sales. Yesterday I sold 19 day before 20 for one item £8.95.

Today I sold 4 items at £8.95 and 6 or 7 hours later still 4 sales so I decided to drop the price to £7.95 leading to 3 more sales. 7 sales for the day.

I’ve been the number 1 seller over the last few weeks but today I was number 2 seller and my competitor sold more then me 10 for the day and they didn’t make any adjustments to their listing or price.

So why the sudden drop in sales on my listing?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Friday can be a quiet day for sale, no need to panic

Thanks for the reply.

I’m kinda wishing I didn’t drop the price now and done a different method. I watched a YouTube video and this one guy had a drop in sales and he called eBay up and they reset his eBay account and then sales started to come through again.

Their is another video teaching you to reset your account so I have done that it’s late now so won’t be expecting anything till the morning.

My price is dropped still and sponsor rate increased hopefully I can get up to 10+ sales a day and then change price and sponsor add rate and continue where I left off.

I did notice items that were selling 20-30 units a day are now struggling to get 20 views per hour with no sales in the past few hours?

Would resetting my account help even if I'm at the top of my category, even with sponsored listings on?

It is peak summer activity seasons. In the USA we have a major holiday. Sales are expected to be lower the next few days.

@OP, summer holidays but then again a lot depends on your market - perhaps buyers are considering an alternative item that's newer? Just an idea - maybe a newer version is for sale?

Re: Sudden drop in sales?

Here is an update of my sales.

So after dropping price yesterday and increasing sponsored ad rate my sales so far are now 8 for today and it’s only mid day.

However I’ve been on eBay live chat today and got them on their end to refresh the listings. They have told me not to make any revisions for the next 48hrs so I will continue selling at this cheaper price then increase it in 2 days to the price I was selling it at.

My advice to people who have had a drop in sales is if everything is fine with your traffic to your listings in seller hub but customers are not buying from you and buying from your competitors instead. Go to eBay live chat and get them to look at it on their end and they will refresh the listings for you.

Your listings will not drop in search results or anything like that it will just be refreshed and boosted up apparently that’s what will happen. Only time will tell.

Re: Sudden drop in sales?

It’s worked guys shortly after speaking on eBay live chat and after them refreshing my listing another 2 sales in 1hr. 10 already sold today. I would like to increase price and lower sponsor add but the eBay rep told me to keep it this way for 48hrs so I will leave it this way until 48hrs passed.

Can I post links here to YouTube videos? I’m not sure if I can. But their is videos on YouTube showing you how to reset your listings but eBay live chat can do that for you as well.

Re: Sudden drop in sales?

Your fluctuating sales cannot be fixed by anyone on the eBay CS team more than you could have done yourself. It's a myth you could have deduced yourself if you think about it.
What they presumably did for you was to edit your listing and save it without making any changes. This would force your eBay listing to be re-assessed by eBay search algorithm (Cassini) for search placement.

If Cassini finds several factors in your favour upon re-assessment, it may rank you higher than your competitors; otherwise, you could remain where you were or sink lower perhaps.

My theory is that CS tricked Cassini by pretending to edit your listing. You were asked to allow 48 hours to enable Cassini to crawl your listing and compare it to other folks you compete with.

But it was your drop in price that caused your sales to return.

As regards why your sales dropped, I'll bet you £1 you've taken a hit somewhere that's inconspicuous to you: poor feedback disguised as positive, delivery marked as late, neutral feedback, loads of unresponded messages, loads of return request or INAD, INR, short return window, etc. It may even be that your competitor surpassed you at one or more of these factors, so you became the second place in search results. Cassini looks at all these.

During this kind time of year sales are slow

Re: Sudden drop in sales?

I have 100% feedback respond to all customers as quick as I can and all DSR ratings are 5 star.

The increase in sales probably was down to dropping the price as £7.95 19 customers brought the product when the day before sales were only 4 at £8.95 and 3 later on after changing price.

I didn’t wait the 48hrs as my sponsor add was to high so I increased the price of my listing back to £8.95 4 sales on Saturday again so far on Sunday 2 early hours in the morning.

I personally think the drop in sales is because the market is reduced in terms of price now no doubt if I lower my pricing to £7.95 lots of sales will come in again.

Either way I’m happy I’m still at the top of the listing and still selling.

Re: Sudden drop in sales?

Is it possible that impressions being cut by 3/4 is Ebay somehow throttling the account/listing?

Re: Sudden drop in sales?

Something interesting happened on Friday. I received a message from my main competitor asking me to change my photos in my eBay listing because they are the same as theirs. I got in touch with eBay and eBay said I’m complying with eBays policy do not worry.

I let my competitor know this and they were okay about it. I used this contact as a chance to speak to them about pricing of the listings. I said if we keep under cutting each other their will be no profit for either of us and they agreed and shortly up their price to 5p cheaper than me. Now sales are back to normal for me and them even tho they were doing fairly well anyway.

I decided message my competitor today. This is what I wrote.

Hi,

I was thinking of upping the price to £9.95 as I believe we can both sell the product for this price.

The price we are selling at now is a fair price but I still believe we can increase the price and still generate sales.

We might as well kind of work together and not just keep under cutting each other as we could end up selling much lower and I know that’s not what you want and it’s certainly not what I want.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Kindest Regards

Sam

It’s clear to see instead of being rivals with competition why not work together I know my product is good and so does my competitor they know their product is good we know we can both sell a lot so why not work together instead of being at war. Makes perfect sense if you ask me.

It's funny, I just ran into the same issue as you. 3-13 sales per day. Last two days I've sold 1 item.

Slow this AM here. Im assuming because people are at work and have less funds after a long weekend of travel and BBQs.

eBay is dead. Seems like a waste of time now to even bother with staying on there. Have had tons more sales on Etsy than egay.
