Default Think I'm about to get screwed

I sold a high value item, around $900, and the buyer claims made a mistake and sent me a message asking to cancel, but not an actual cancellation request as far as I can tell.

My listing said no returns, but as I had not shipped yet (the label had been printed and it's packed, I had a pick up set up for the next day), I thought surely cancelling is an option.

I get on the live chat with an ebay representative asking how to cancel. They guide me through it, now it's cancelled.

Now apparently I have to offer a refund. At this point, I'm surprised by the chat rep, and I come to find out that paypal pockets any fees so I'm in the hole $50ish for my trouble, because shipping was over the expected rate, too.

We're in limbo right now, where ebay says the next step is for me to issue the refund. The buyer has not responded in a while. Googling how to uncancel is coming up short.

I have perfect hundreds+ feedback over 10 years up to this point. The seller has like 7. I think he's trying to scam me tbh.

My spouse is suggesting I just wait it out. I'm worried that I should be doing something.

How screwed am I? Should I be doing something else?

Everyday cost of doing business. It is how paypal and ebay work these days. Cancel the shipping if you can. You lost the paypal fees and of course you have to refund.....

All you should've needed to do was a cancellation request through eBay. I've never heard of having to do a separate refund in addition to cancelling the order.

How is PP holding back $50? They should only be holding back their transaction fee?

How are you getting scammed? You canceled the order. You have the item...... Where is the scam?

Assuming you purchased your shipping label through eBay, all you have to do is going into your shipping labels screen and void it.

I think OP means that the buyer cancelled on purpose so that he would lose out with paypal fees.

It happens to me about 3 times a month but the paypal fee for me is around £3, so nothing to fuss about. But $50 is a big uff

I think he was attempting to get the item and do a chargeback or something.

From the chat:
The amount you only need to refund is the item price plus shipping.

After shipping costs ($30-ish), I'm left with $62 less than that in paypal.

Can I recoup the shipping costs at least?

Still, $30 for trying to help a guy out.

Thanks, Would you recommend switching to managed payments, too? I'm really pissed at paypal for this policy and ebay for not making it more clear what would happen, but I don't plan on taking returns in the future, so maybe it's still more convenient for buyers?

Could you not cancel the postage label since it hasn't been scanned?

With Royal mail in the UK, i pay for a label, and if it is not scanned within 10 days, i can request a refund and they deposit the money back to me.

I'm unsure of how the USA postal service works, but worth a try.

And look at it this way OP, i would rather lose $50 than $900 lol.

Also, on your high value listings, place something like this in the description; "ONLY BUYERS WITH 20+ FEEDBACK CAN PURCHASE THIS"...

That should sort you out in the long run.

OP is in USA,if he has been on Ebay for ten years, how can he not know how cancel and refund work?
When you cancel an order via Ebay,by finding the order and cancel, giving a reason, the Paypal payment your receive should have been refunded to your buyer.
if he has used a credit card,it could take days to show up in his cc account .
AS For the shipping label,go find it in MY Ebay and void it,after x number of days, when USPS find out it has not been used, you will get a full refund from USPS.
As for the item ,Paypal has revised its policy ,it may keep its full or partial fee which is 30 cents plus 2.9 for domestic transaction.
The way credit card processing works is that a refund is a separate transaction and there is also a fee PAYPAL has to pay.
iF YOU cancel your order soon (same day or in hours) ,before Paypal submit the transaction to its processor, you may get more back.
Yu can find more on PAYPAL site

It's simple why I don't know this. I do very low volume and am usually a buyer. When I have sold things, I have had no problems.

Since I do very few transactions over years, I'm not very wired in to changes in policies.

Upon doing this one, I was very surprised at the taxes my buyer faced from the internet tax law, that's a huge WTF, and this regressive paypal policy. It just seems like poor customer service. I would rather paypal raised rates across the board, but they can't advertise a lower rate as easily.

---------------
it is the way credit card charge and refund work, industry practice, since most buyers use credit cards,Paypal is following industry standard.
but did you look at your Paypal account,?
if Ebay rep has guided you to cancel the order, your Paypal account should show the refund, you should find out how much Paypal withheld from the original amount.

I confirmed with an ebay phone rep I should just have the money sitting in paypal, then they'll take out what they need to cover everything. Then they'll refund back to me the difference of taxes. Paypal has its own 'issue refund' button. I think I should not press it. It's all quite confusing, but I think you guys have answered my questions and made me feel better enough for now :-).
