They have agreed with HMRC, as have Amazon and Etsy to be vigilant in monitoring VAT evasion under threat of penalty and legislation. If you are running two sole trader accounts and they link them they will add them together. If you go over 85K combined then they will suspend you.
It's all done through your business details (UTR/self assessment), shouldn't be too difficult for them to link if your separate accounts are legit particularly as they're using MP roll-out to verify this kind of info.
Would I take two sole trader accounts with same name and address over 85K in total, no chance. Go stealth or go Limited Company ... or register for VAT.
As you said though, will ebay cotton on or even care if you do it, who knows?. The chances of them making the link will surely increase as they move accounts onto MP.
