Default Potential Scam

Hey! Hope everyone is well.

I have an odd situation here. A buyer purchased a laptop from us. He opened a return case indicating that "it doesn't fit", so huge Red Flag there, also his account is new- BIG Red Flag but we sell so many items that this one was overlooked, don't give me a hard time about it.

Then he shipped something back and it was delivered to a mail box. There is nothing in my mailbox (I presume he changed the unit number on the label).
But it shows up as delivered on eBay to us.

I am waiting on USPS but I think the buyer has changed the Unit number. Anyone deal with this before?

UPDATE: While on the phone with eBay and while typing this out, they turned the decision over in our favor. They saw that we are TopRated and the customer was new and so the case has been closed.

Still I'd like to know if anyone knows how this scam works (I think they just changed the UNIT Number)

Are you renting a mail box with some mail station ?
Does the return shipping label has the mail box number?

how much is the laptop, over a certain amount,it must be signed for.

OP did not say if he provides the return shipping label or the buyer uses his own.

Don't be surprised if this buyer makes an appeal and they reverse the decision.
This happened to me.

The buyer probably used a different unit number but eBay will see delivered to the address, I had this before with laptops, some you win some you lose with eBay.

Check for small packages , anything delivered on that day that has a label.
Sometimes they ship a small worthless item back and you don't notice it.
Very likely they could have taken the unit number off or changed the number, maybe could track it down .

if it were just a first class label,it would just show delivered to that zipcode.
what scammers do is to find a place in that zipcode area which is open for business and some one will accept mail like dry cleaner, restaurant, mail station, gift shop, the person opens the envelope and find a piece of candy and throw the package away
