Default Ebay Phone Verification - Weird

I just did a phone verification with a friends old account (about 5 years old and he only used it to buy things - only has 7 feedback). I tried to list a test auction just to see if it would let me sell and of course it put me through the verification process. Well...when I was talking to the agent, she asked if I was using a new computer because the computer ID's were not matching up. I just told her I got a new computer and all went through OK.

I wonder why she said computer ID? Is that her roundabout way of saying your IP address is different? LOL What do you guys think? I am running a stealth account under a different windows account and all the info is completely different than this other one so I think I am safe but it concerned me when she actually said Computer ID.

Thanks all!!

eBay recognize computers via cookies.

Though I have not found an answer as to why once they have added your computer to their "list of trusted computers"...you can then delete all your cookies and log back into ebay but they manage to recognize you and not do this verification again?

Perhaps they use your IP along with the cookies and that is why you can log back into your sellers account after deleting all your cookies.

Anyone?

I use CC Cleaner and a different windows account for each Ebay ID so I should be ok. Thanks!

^^ I would say you should avoid clearing the cookies EB and PP place on your user accounts/computer. That should help avoid problems like this in the future.

You should really only use CCleaner if you were using multiple seperate ebay accounts on the same user account. Which you are not.

Hmmm I have heard conflicting thoughts on this. So as long as your IP address is different and you are on a different windows user account then clearing cookies is not necessary?

I run seperate machines for each account. That way, even though the ISP changes every day, all cookies and beacons stay in place. Works for me

Exactly, the cookies are used to identify you, which is a good thing right? :D

The conflicting information you are getting is not conflicting, it is relevant, it is that you should clear out your cookies before logging into a seperate ebay account using the same user account.

If you did not clear out the cookies from one ebay account and logged into another ebay account, they would be linked.

Thinking about this phone verification, it would be stupid if eBay did this everytime somebody cleared out their cookies.

It would also be stupid if it happened everytime your IP address changes. But as most people know, when these do change ebay does not always want you to verify yourself, so it must be something else.

So I think it must be to do with IP range e.g. your ebay account going from using 128.157.XX.XX to suddenly using 192.125.XX.XX.

I haven't come across this on the forum yet but I am sure somebody will know.

Because before I open my machine I shut down all the others and reset the router thingy. I never run two machines at the same time and always reset in between. Works for me

PS: Nice joint of beef and 2 bottles of good Merlot about to be destroyed!!
