PayPal mandatory now in EBAY Australia - Alternatives?

:D FYI for the Australians on the forum, here is what paypal australia will
allow:

You can have a paypal account in a name different from the name on the bank
account. If it is a personal account they say they want the family name to be the same. There is a way around this
You make a premier or business paypal account which can have a different
name. With these accounts you have more flexibility.

My interpretation of this is in Australia you have similar means of doing the same
as in the USA or UK. Think about it.

Slavaja 03-10-2008 10:42 PM

hey would it be possible to add a business account to the australian business paypal account?

PayPal mandatory now in EBAY Australia - Alternatives?

I just listed some items and I got a message saying that ebay australia will require all listings from the 21 of May to accept paypal as payment option.

It didn't say if that is going to be the only paymetn option we will be able to accept or that we will only have to accept it on our listing.

This monopoly that they are trying to do is just going to kill them in the long run.

tenggo 04-11-2008 09:26 PM

Paypal Only

hey there, check the anouncement board on australian ebay, that is just the first step, about a month later paypal will be the ONLY way to receive payments

Slavaja 04-12-2008 04:40 AM

yeh pretty crap i just read that as well

eBay Australia's paypal now a must, hows it going to effect you?

So as most of us know eBay is now forcing Australian users to use paypal on a majority of there listings coming may.

I was wondering, how is this going to effect your business?, are your profits going to take a battering?, will it make you change the products you sell?,

will you quit ebay and build your own site, or maybe you will give Oztion.com ago?

what are your thoughts for those who are Australian users.

tenggo 04-14-2008 08:22 AM

Its bad news

yeah i have been pretty disappointed about it... already set up oztion account and will be telling all my customers to find me there, its a bit slow at the moment but lots of sellers are doing the same so hopefully word gets around... still list a bit on ebay but i really dont like paypal, i have had money taken, accounts frozen etc... the worst thing is that if our paypal account gets into trouble or frozen you cant sell on ebay (you can but wont get paid)cos the only form of payment is paypal...

jscan 04-14-2008 09:58 AM

yeah i have also been looking at oztion, a little slow however this latest decision by ebay mite throw a little trickle of traffic towards oztion

Important Info: New Account Verification + Paypal Only!!

Hi everyone,

After checking through the forums, I just realised that no one addressed the following issues with are extremely important and would affect all of us.

I have to mention, I know that all this is going to happen on eBay.com.au but I am not sure if it's going to happen on ebay.co.uk or ebay.com. Any feedback would be highly appreciated.

Here I go....

1. All items listed for sale on eBay.com.au on or after 21 May 2008 must offer PayPal as one of the payment methods.

2. All items appearing on eBay.com.au as of 17 June 2008 must be paid for using one of the following:

1. PayPal
2. Pay on pick up (i.e. paid for when picking up the item)
3. Visa/MasterCard (with transactions processed by PayPal).

No other payment methods will be permitted.

Please note a small number of categories are excluded from these changes. Find out about these exclusions.

And....

Today were starting a new initiative to help prevent account takeovers.

From now on the system will be noting the computers members regularly use when buying and selling on eBay. Then in June, we'll begin checking the computer you use to list an item to see if it's one you regularly use.

If you list an item using a different computer (e.g. at a friend's house, in a hotel, at the library) we may make a call to the phone number on your account to confirm that it's really you. We might also prompt you to verify your identity in other ways.

Having your current phone number on file helps eBay protect you. A wrong or outdated phone number will mean we cant verify your identity. This could delay your ability to list items or respond to your customers.

All this news is the worst thing I have ever heard.....I will be awaiting feedback from all of you....

mantisinc 04-15-2008 11:56 AM

Oh my lord....! No changing IP addresses then guys :)

Looks like for you lot multiple accounts will have to be sorted through different routers.

Or, will they be looking at the MAC address of the PC?

jscan 04-15-2008 10:19 PM

Modee do you use any other auction sites other then ebay?

imjustme 04-16-2008 08:01 AM

What's the big problem with PayPal? I use about 15 PayPal accounts at the same time. Just sell $10 per day on each of the 15 accounts and you'll make $150 in a day :D

Jonas 04-17-2008 03:13 PM

Australia PayPal doesn't demand SS# so legit sellers will leave but scammers will stay. Scammers know how to rip people off on paypal and buyers paying bank account in paypal or their paypal funds will get screwed when the scammer has no paypal funds in their account. PayPal Australia lets scammers do ⊗⊗⊗⊗ tracking numbers as in YouTube - Ebay and Paypal - Today Tonight report

Australia doesn't have the "seller protection" so legit sellers are screwed and nobody in australia will do paypal to foreign countries at the very least.

jscan 04-17-2008 11:36 PM

hey jonas thanks for that article, i was looking for some news on this but was unable to find anything, thanks

ebaysucksthebigone 04-18-2008 06:46 AM

yeah this really does suck.. i read this on the register website and was shocked, especially because its hitting australia first, does this mean we are the highest risk in fraud compared to other countries ? im not sure.

nevertheless i cant believe they are forcing people to use and pay by paypal only, i guess when the time comes we will have to see how this pans out, im thinking a lot of sellers will be doing transactions out of ebay, due to this, they will probably use ebay to make the sale then be in touch with the member and make the sale out of ebay using direct deposit or other means...

GreenBean 04-18-2008 06:59 AM

xxxbone, that is mentioned as being again their new regulations..... having contact with the
buyer to do the transaction. I think OZ got picked as a try-out for the new policy. You
reckon there are a lot of sham artists in OZ? LOL.

The policy as you say does sux BIG time.

scouse12345 04-18-2008 07:33 AM

Hey, you got sunshine.. them huge f*ck off Prawns size of dogs, and half decent cricket team.... whats the problem... :)

GreenBean 04-18-2008 07:37 AM

Exactly. Mine is only paypal. Nearly everything else is great. ROFLMAO!

jscan 04-18-2008 08:34 AM

the more i read about this the more i get agitated

Jonas 04-18-2008 05:19 PM

PayPal forced will make Australia the highest fraud. I've read eBay actually forced it because of a news report in Australia on how paypal was unsafe and so everyone was stopping using it.

Also doesn't paypal's "seller protection" not count at all for Australia?

GreenBean 04-18-2008 08:09 PM

There are some items that have paypal protection especially where the seller is from USA.
I guess in OZ, there are at the moment payment alternatives so that precious protection from paypal is not used so much.

Jonas 04-18-2008 09:14 PM

Yeah that's why sellers in China like shipping to USA through paypal because of paypal's "seller protection".

GreenBean 04-18-2008 09:17 PM

For the life of me, I can not understand ebay changing payment methods. Actually if I do
really think about it, I do as ebay calls it progress. Huh.
I am of the school if it ain't broke don't fix it. ROFL.

jscan 04-19-2008 03:39 AM

doughboykilla thanks for that link, i must have missed it on ACA

jscan 04-19-2008 03:40 AM

I have just registered on Oztion, im going to see how that goes :)
anyone else done the same?

mantisinc 04-19-2008 03:58 AM

Wow, Oztion looks like a good escape route for you guys.

I can see that growing in popularity fairly soon...

GreenBean 04-19-2008 04:14 AM

Been looking at the site. Sadly my items are not on it at all. But I wish anyone using it
to succeed.

jscan 04-19-2008 05:51 AM

yeah its already got quite a few members, still starting to grown though. some of my items are on there and the market isnt too saturated.

its got a good id verification method unlike ebay, it gives you the choice to choose how many ID verifications you wish to complete, the more you complete the more "ID verification" icons you get on your profile = more trust for buyers.

they are as follows:

- ID verifcation (send in a copy of your id signed by a person of statue )
- Verify by phone
- Verify by mail
- Verify by creditcard
- there was one more, i cant remember though.

anyways il see how it goes over the next month or so and let you guys know

Mandatory Use of Paypal

AS many may have read Ebay Australia is making Paypal mandatory and eventually the sole payment allowed on the site. They have also been reported as saying that if successful the changes would be implemented on other eBay sites. Here is an article from an Aus newspaper that may prove interesting....

Reserve Bank could scuttle eBay's plans
Asher Moses and Jacob Saulwick
April 22, 2008 - 2:00PM

eBay's plan to force all of its users on to PayPal faces opposition from the Reserve Bank, which is considering weighing in to the issue.

The Central Bank has long called for buyers and sellers to have as much choice as possible in what payment systems they use and strongly opposes any moves that reduce competition in the market.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is investigating whether eBay Australia's new policy of forcing all items to be paid for using PayPal, which eBay owns, or cash on delivery/pick-up, breaches trade practice and competition laws.

PayPal performs payment processing for online sellers, allowing them to accept credit card payments and money transfers without having their own merchant credit card accounts.

But the policy, to come into effect on June 17, will mean direct bank deposits, cheques and money orders will all be barred.

The move by the auction site is presently limited to Australia only and will hit sellers with extra fees because PayPal charges them a fee of between 1.1 and 2.4 per cent to accept payments - usually using credit cards - via the service.

Several groups have expressed concern that forcing eBay users on to PayPal, rather than giving them the choice of which payment method to use, would prevent the emergence of competitors to PayPal in the online payments market.

The ACCC is inviting submissions from the public on the issue until May 2. It is understood the Reserve Bank, which has in the past stated it would like more competition for payments over the internet rather than less, is now deciding whether to make a submission.

Strong opposition from the Central Bank would almost certainly scuttle eBay's plans. The auction site's global chief executive, John Donahoe, has said the PayPal policy will be rolled out in other countries if it is successful here.

The Professional eBay Sellers Alliance, which includes eBay's top sellers who generate hundreds of millions of dollars in sales on the site each year, strongly opposes the changes and plans to lead a worldwide revolt.

Alastair MacGibbon, eBay's trust and safety director, said the announcement was designed to protect users as one is four times less likely to have a problem on eBay if one pays using PayPal than with other methods.

The Reserve Bank has ruled out stepping back unconditionally from regulating the payments system, and remains concerned about the level of market power held by credit card companies.

The Reserve has expressed support for new methods of payment that could act as competition for international card schemes. New methods could give merchants and customers more choice about how they make and receive payments.

A 2006 speech by an Assistant Governor of the Central Bank, Philip Lowe, documented the growth of alternative payment schemes overseas that had not yet been adopted in Australia.

For example, a number of countries had adopted "online debit" schemes that allow customers to transfer money directly from their bank account to the merchant without needing to use a credit card or scheme debit card.

Research by the Reserve has found that credit card payments are more costly than EFTPOS and cash, due to the fees imposed, the higher risk of fraud. and the length of time it takes for shopkeepers to process the payments.

jscan 04-22-2008 07:07 AM

ebay will get away with it in the end, the ACCC is useless, and the reserve bank is just as bad.

ebaysucksthebigone 04-22-2008 09:57 AM

i hope not... :|
