Need help from Computer Saavy stealthers.
 

I noticed there was a sticky about laptops, but I prefer desktop for my work area, I can't have a laptop in my office, my 2 year old would destroy it.

Anyway's here's my dilemna, I currently have a pretty cheap computer, and I think the 50+ window accounts are really slowing it down. It goes through periods where it freezes up, I get countless hourglass stalls. Windows explorer becomes unresponsive. When I change the Mac IP it stalls and doesn't want to connect online.

Anyway's, I want to buy a new desktop, and I want something good. I do a ton of work, and waiting for the computer to respond takes up over half my time online.

I know very little about computers, and I would like to build my own from Dell. I don't do anything on my computer except work, no games, no movies, just ebay selling(but a lot of ebaying). I need to know what would be the fastest computer which could handle my huge supply of windows user accounts(I plan to have over 100 windows accounts, and need something that won't bog down).

I really appreciate some simple advice on what to buy.

What are the specs of you old desktop, and what is your budget?

The hour glass part, man oh man...taking us back in time here. Dell is going to rape you on price unless you wait a really long time for the random deals they throw up. Extremely rare occasion.

i know you said no laptop. but if you want a fresh computer just get a netbook and use it strictly for selling online. dont download crap on it or any of that and you will have no issues. well worth the $200

Budget isn't an issue. Time is money for me, and I need something good. I don't have enough hours in the day to do the work I need to do, so I need something that can go as fast as I can.

Doesn't have to be Dell, I really don't even know what brand to go with.

No issues with 100's of windows user accounts? I use fresh user accounts for all my ebay accts. I prefer to have the cookies saved for each one.

I also don't want anything cheap because I do have to download certain programs, and I use a lot of spreadsheets, as well as photoshop.

Also, this is unrelated to my original question, but do all routers basically have the same loading time when switching Mac's? I'd be interested in knowing if there are any that pretty much instantly load the new ip addresses. Mine take about a minute, which isn't a big deal, but when you consider that I might have to print labels off 20-25 different accounts in a day, it really is time consuming.

I was able to handle most of this easily for the past few years as I've only dealt with a few different accounts per week, but now I've decided to step it up big time and take advantage of the Holiday season. With that commitment I've come to the realization that I have to do something quick about my time management issues.

Appreciate the help guys. I'm great at handling ebay issues/but HORRIBLE at handling my computer issues.

Interesting, is it true that having 200 user accounts doesn't eat up much more space than 2 user accounts?

I've stepped up the game a bit, and would like to have 200 accounts by next year. I open 4 accounts per week basically.

So then any idea why my computer is slower than that broke down truck in the driveway? Also why on Earth does it decide to act up every once in a while to the point where it won't even have internet access for 15-30 minutes at a time? I should have plenty of MB available, why is this thing so slow?

Windows 7 32 Bit is on the slower side of things (imo).

yea it has, but it's gotten worse the past few weeks. This computer has been slow for a while, but it's getting worse.

I have to buy a new desktop anyway, and am probably going to buy one in November during Black Friday. Money isn't really an object, I just want to buy a top of the line desktop for my needs. I don't need all the bells and whistles to play games or blu-rays etc. . .

I just need a computer that's going to kick butt in speed and reliability.

i would go with an i5 or i7 desktop get atleast 4 gigs of ram 8 gigs would be perfect

Get rid of windows 7, install XP, will run faster.

If you want something fast with 100 user accounts, id look to spend about 800$. You have two things on your side right now for great deals, windows 8 was just launched so everyone is still clearenceing their old computers and its almost end of year....time to inflate sale numbers!

Work on getting few desktops or lappies or whatever - helps to cut down on cycling time. At prices these days...peanuts

Yep, different MAC ID's which changes the IP's. Having 100 stealth accounts is the same as having 2 stealth accounts really, just more work.

I have them all on Gmail accounts and I have them all fwded to 1 account so that I don't have to check 100 email's daily, I just log into each email if I have a question.

I list 90% of my stuff by auction. With limits and certain vero issues, it's much easier to spread them out. Different backgrounds(I go to fabric stores and buy dozens of different), differents locations(even different states), it's pretty legit. I've had bad vero issues in the past, so this really cuts down on it. I've had to go through precautions because I depend on my ebay income and I can not afford to put all my eggs in one basket. I owe a lot to this board because this is where I learned it all.

Now, is Windows 8 supposed to be an upgrade? Is that something I should look into?

if you do regular backups, i would disable 'system restore' as i have never found it useful but you MUST do regular backups.
go to start, and right click on computer, then click properties. click 'advanced system settings'. there are a few things here that can help speed up the computer.
under the 'performance' tab, click settings. under 'visual effects' choose adjust for best performance, this takes off a lot of bs animation settings that slow down the computer.
under the 'system performance' tab, you can disable system restore.
if you have any troubles just PM me, there are a bunch of other things you can do to speed up the computer

If you live close to a Costco, it may be worth the drive for a very fast desktop.
