Is it a Scam?

I just sold an iPhone 5s on ebay. The buyer wants the save from the ebay feeds by paying outside of ebay through paypal. Idk if this is a scam And will I still have my buyer's protection If I accept paying outside of ebay?

Thanks guys for your response.

Re: Is it a Scam?

I wouldn't do it. Its easier to win a paypal case rather than ebay if opened on his end

You have the same protection paying with paypal either way.

Hes probably looking to save ebay fees.

Still you're not getting anything out of it so id say no.

Re: Is it a Scam?

I don't know necessarily that it's a rip off or you're going to get scammed even know your chances might be high if something like that happens! But the reason could be because the seller wants the money immediate versus waiting 14 days through PayPal for the money

But regardless it is a huge chance that I would not take!

Re: Is it a Scam?

This persons fee's shouldn't be your problem.

Do what you feel comfortable with, but personally i would pay through the ebay checkout, or he could open a case for non payment and it could negatively impact your ebay account.

Also if you were not happy with the item and wanted to leave a bad rating, he could get it removed as he could claim you never paid for an item.

You will also only have seller protection sending money on paypal if you supply an address on the payment.

EBay checkout was implemented for exactly this kind of reason

rsot you have an amazing sense of humor hahahahaha
OP, NEVER do outside of eb. Good way to get banned in a hurry.

bjammin 08-22-2014 10:47 AM

Re: Is it a Scam?

The OP is the seller, not the buyer. How in the hell is the buyer gonna save EB fees when the buyer doesnt have EB fees?

Tell him no thank you.

eBay is now NSA. They automatically catch their no-no messages from all words from transferring words through their system.

Re: Is it a Scam?

Sounds fishy, the BUYER wants to save on fees?? Sounds like hes playing brain games with our mind.

Nothing wrong with invoicing customers. But his buyer says that HE wants to save on EB fees. As a buyer, what EB fee is he talking about?

This is my vision of whats going on. The OP has a fresh new account, so a scammer sees he is new and is trying to take advantage of his lack of knowledge. The buyer thinks the seller wont know that the buyer doesnt have EB fees. So he is just throwing out a random excuse to make a illogical point valid.

but why not do it who cares what his reasoning is? is the buyer asking for a discount since the seller would be saving on fees? I just hear everyone screaming scam and what is a scam about snagging a buyer from ebay and getting a deal done without paying fees. I personally do it all the time I strive to avoid ebay checkout means feedback extortion and ebay fees. I do not like either one of those options personally. I mean there are people here who make a living off getting buyers from ebay to their store or site to avoid fees, sometimes ebay fees can be your whole profit!

BigCJ 08-23-2014 12:49 PM

Re: Is it a Scam?

OP, DO NOT DO IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

Report the buyer and cancel the transaction.

To Danshan: There are too many things that can and WILL MOST LIKELY go wrong with this transaction.

There is minimum protection as is.
Doing it this way is even less protection for the seller.

If the buyer screams 'The seller told me to pay outside of ebay'
He disputes the charge, the seller gets NARU and thats that for this phone that will most likely be long gone.

My concern was that the buyer is telling the OP that he (the buyer) wants to save money by going outside eBay.

He will not have to wait for a case outcome.

Even with an invoice, paypal will most likely jump on the buyer bandwagon.

If the buyers address is unconfirmed, he most likely couldnt bid on the sellers goods to begin with. So he tried to usurp the transaction and head straight to paypal. :s

You blow your own money.

I am selective about losing mine.

Invoices are for known and trusted buyers.

Not someone telling me they want to 'save fees'.

As the seller, I am in control.

Never EVER the buyer.

Not a chance Mate.

This is how it works.

If you come from a less populated country in the world that is rich. Your account bs will be less far more less.

If you registered in a country that has more then 300,000,000 people where do you think most of the online crimes come from?

I wonder how setting up a Nigerian account set up would be?

Nigerian, Chinese, USA, Brazil, India, and some other of the 3rd world countries.

I know in Australia they send out a letter to the address to verify so they know you live there. I don't know if they still do that or not but I read about it mate.

It's very hard. When I was 18 years old. I use to make paypal accounts just to see limits in all the countries in the world. Brazil, And Australia were at $4,000 sending limit or receiving limits. I can't remember what one it was but it was like this.

In the USA you require to enter the SSN. Now since you live in the USA you must think the rest of the world has the same system right? NOPE!

It's all different for everyone else.

If you go to Mcds in Northern Parts of America, the food is different then the southern states on the menu, or any where else you go in the world.

Ebay is the same way, it's different for any other country in the world.

You guys deal with so much bs that I don't even care to start up USA accounts. I'm thinking of making them just to sell on them but I'd never use them personally with this $20,000 or 200 limit per year. What a joke!

Sure you can register EIN numbers, etc. But ...nevermind.
:smash:

I use to talk to a guy from a 3rd world country. And the things he had to do just to open up an account made it so not worth it at all.

I just told him get a VPS and buy a USA account way less problems. Or a European account.

Welfare money!

If you say so!

:focus:

Anyways I'd be scared if someone wants to save me fees because they can report you to ebay for dealing with business outside of EB and that's not good.

Bad for business.

I've had people trying to buy off of ebay also.

The moment I say yes is the moment they can make that phone call to ebay to show I broke the rules and god knows what would happen to my account. Why risk it? All of this for what? $0.75 cents savings? I'm counting the $100's I'd lose in the long run for a few months.
