Anyone know why some sellers do this?

I see some sellers that sell high price items like phones in high volume change up the pricing sometimes by increasing $10 or decreasing by $10 randomly..and I could never figure out why..my only assumptions are:
1) increase price because low on stock
2) increase price because they rank higher on the search page so they know they can increase the price and still kill it

Can't say why they do these things but I have done both for the exact reasons you stated. Oh yeah sometimes prices are raised when you don't want an item to sell.

Wouldn't be for the second reason. An increase in price usually drops a listings search rank (very little).

More likely to be the first.

I do increase the price once I’m low of stock because I dont want anyone to buy

Why increase the price if your low on stock though? Why not just keep the price and sell what you have then re-list when you re-stock?

Now you have the option to keep BIN listing alive at 0 stock but if u didn't use this and sold out of stock in your listing your listing would close and you would lose all viewers and watchers and ranking if u were in a good place.

So raising the price so no one would purchase would keep the listing active

Ahhh got it.

I assume not letting the listing end would also keep your "x sold" number next to your listing active also so you can keep growing that number right?
If your listing ends that number would start from zero again correct?

Re: Anyone know why some sellers do this?

I used to always play with my prices... If something has 8 watchers, a lot for my category, I know it will sell. So I can raise the price 5-10. If it doesn't sell id reduce it. A lot of times I'm guessing on the price anyway, so watchers are a good indication if there weren't many previous sales.

I don't have time to watch that closely anymore, but when I get another of the item in I will sometimes try for an extra $5. To my surprise, I was under pricing things for a long time. My sales got a lot better once I started finding the optimal price

I do this sometimes.. Move the pirce up and down by $5 or $10. I do it on BIN items . Reason Why!

I see how many people are watching my item. if i change the price or revise the listing Ebay will Send then an Email to the ones watching the item. and in my experience it usually leads to a Sale and of course more Dumb question from what I call Lookie-Loo's (people who just want to talk and ask about your item)

That's true, I forgot about that! They do notify the buyers immediately once you lower the price on an item they're watching. I used to sell cars for a car dealership, and that was a great trick.
