Question about defect rating

I am trying to build my defect rate back to below 5%.
Question:
A buyer wants to return a defective item, and already opened a return request. Can I ask the buyer to cancel the return request and I will just refund him his money directly through paypal?
If he DOES comply and cancels the return request will the defect rating for this transaction also be removed?

Well if he will select that he actually opened it by mistake defect may won't appear on your dashboard however not 100% sure about this
