ebay fees are crazy high

I just sold a drone on ebay for £955 and ebay want £162.99 in fees is this the norm?
and how does anyone make money on ebay its a joke
i now want to cancel the sale and refund the buyer and put the fees on the price of the item when i relist it so try and get £1150 and is this the best move and should i ring ebay first and tell them what i want to do?

sold £955.00 fees £162.99 left £792.01
thx
Steve

No,dont tell Ebay, just cancel it,better use the reason buyer wants it cancelled????

sold £955.00 fees £162.99 left £792.01
thats 17 %,did you charge shipping ?

I have cancelled order using the excuse buyer wants to cancel .
Dont do it too often.

take a look at fee schedule,it does sound high, but drones may be in a different category like collectibles or books

is your 15 shipping included in your 955?if not then Ebay is charging you FVF on 970.
then it is 16.8 %,you can go t o Ebay and look up fee schedule

Did this all happen overnight in the UK? Something isn't adding up given your keenness to get out of the transaction.

buyer cannot cancel order, but if he files INAD,may be he can.

should i call ebay and what should i tell them?

steve

so buyer gets Ebay involved,so probably Ebay cancelled the order for him,INAD would be the reason.
No,you should not be charged for the cancelled order, fees should be reversed, check your seller account.
do not call Ebay unless it did not reverse the fee.
Relist at a higher price, also check fee shcedule why you are paying a higher %.
where did you list the item,in UK and in GBP?
where is the buyer?

There are actually 2 fees involved, one is the final value fee which Ebay earns as a sales venue, another fee is for accepting credit card, which MP charges.
There could also be foreign exchange fee if seller sold the item on non UK Ebay site.

No,but there must be fees involved asking AMZN to fill your order if you have sent your inventory to AMZN warehouse and there is storage fee as well.
When you want to dispose your remaining inventory, there will also be fee

IMO the chances of a seller wanting to get out of a transaction being hit with a buyer who makes a claim of 'it's not as described' to ebay, and ebay canceling the transaction for them in the small hours of the morning are highly unlikely in the extreme.

If they have then OP has nothing to worry about. ;)

Ebay customer service is 24/7,some are in Philipines,

I think OP should do more research on how to sell on Ebay ,questions like fees, buyer remorse ,INAD dispute, shipping etc

if you are going to relist, better clarify the fee issue with Ebay first, call or go to seller forum and ask other sellers

DId check you check the fee schedule, not all categories have the same fee.
THERE is fee for selling the item and shipping and there is fee for processing your customer's credit card.
Before MP,Ebay charges you FVF on item and shipping and Paypal charges 30 cents plus 2.9%.

Back then ,there is listing fee and then if you want more pictures, there are extra fees.

postage was £15 special delivery i didnt charge for packaging cost and driving to the post office and getting in line and car fuel cost
i think ebay make £3 profit off the postage cost as they want sellers to offer free postage but how can it be free unless you add it to the selling price on a buy it now
i dont know if im going crazy but ebay is making 9 billion a year and sellers seem to get stiffed by scammers and high fees and the no return policy is can be over ridden by ebay

thx
Steve

Re: ebay fees are crazy high

Remember a person that will advertise a product on real life will cost you more and take more time to sell

It seems high but it's only an average cost you have in all ecommerce advertising situation less Amazon. On Amazon you can sell for fun if it is going well, in worse case you pay for sell on Amazon

Struggling to think why on earth this would happen to you...

Anyway, either ebay have cancelled the transaction as you mentioned earlier or you are going to have to do it from your end. One way of the other the buyer will be refunded and you'll avoid paying your fee. Job done.

I not a seller as i only wanted to sell a few things
I sold stuff over 5 years ago
I find eBay charges expensive and scammers can break the item send it back and you lose the value of the item as you can't resell it and u still get eBay fees so it's a big lose
eBay seems to be great for buyers and crap for sellers
So I'm not interested in running a full-time account on eBay
It will keep you poor

Yes the buyer and me the seller are in the UK and I need to ring eBay to see why I was charged 17% and eBay says electrical are 9%

stevebills 03-06-2023 01:34 PM

Re: ebay fees are crazy high

this is a wake up call as i cant believe anyone can make a profit on ebay as some of my fees are 17% so i presume the ebay charges have to go on the price on the item sold or you wouldn't make a profit and no wonder sellers dont like to except offers as the margins may be very tiny and one ebay seller told me he has moved to vinted website and ive not tried them yet but its free to sell and ebay make 9 billion a year there the only ones getting rich and all the sellers are left with the crumbs.
i rang ebay to ask why they have charged me 17% and she couldnt tell me and told me to hold for 2 mins to speak to someone else and after 50 mins still no answer i just got lied to and fobbed off ebay is very scammy.
i guess all these big corporations are scammy and we cant change it we have to live with the bull****

Would be useful to know what they said to 'fob you off' . IMO they're fee is probably correct, it's calculated by a computer, not levied arbitrarily.

Give or take a few pence the fee you were charged can be explain in one of two ways.

You had your listing promoted by, say, 4% but I'm guessing you'd know, or as is more likely, you're a below standard seller (16.8% + 30p)

Re: ebay fees are crazy high

Thx for all the replys I'm not going to use eBay as I'm making a loss not a profit I'm sure there's only one person getting rich and that's eBay as sellers seem to get a bad wrap
The no return policy is a load of bull its false advertising
Thx
Steve

To be fair to ebay, can you imagine what some unscrupulous sellers would do if they rigidly enforced it. They also have to respect a buyers statutory rights, we can't expect them to ignore legal directives.

In any event, their 'no returns' option is clearly explained in their policies.

It's only for private sellers anyway, the overwhelming sales are from businesses who have no option but to accept returns, for any reason, whether they like it or not. They seem to cope.

All that said, I do agree that buyers are getting more and more demanding as online sales platforms offer them more and more incentives. Businesses can hide the odd chancer in their financial model, private sellers are clearly more sensitive to just one bad transaction.

9% ?did you look into your Ebay account, there should be a breakdown of that 17% fee.
anyway, since order is cancelled,it should be reversed.
