$5.4M in knockoffs seized at Cincinnati airport
CINCINNATI (AP) — Customs officials looking for counterfeit goods at the Cincinnati airport say they seized more than $5.4 million in knockoffs during a crackdown last week.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports officials seized 289 shipments with 27,000 items at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. They found a few high-end items, but it was mostly lower-cost items such as purses, watches and hats.
The newspaper says the results of the crackdown reflect a national trend. The number of seizures has increased, but the knockoffs tend to be cheaper.
A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the agency was a bit surprised by the findings in Cincinnati and is considering how to address the problem. One option could be adding inspectors to more carefully examine imports.
