| aspkin | 06-04-2015 01:18 AM | PayPal can robocall you with advertising from July [...] The terms state that you consent to allow PayPal and any of its affiliates to contact you via autodialed or prerecorded calls and text messages at any phone number they have on record. So as well as billing and debt collection calls, we can all expect to receive regular calls and text messages containing advertising. You know, those calls and texts everybody hates with a passion. Re: PayPal can robocall you with advertising from July Surely, Surely, Surely will deter people from using paypal, im talking about predominately casual buyers using paypal here and there... |

I hope they have an opt out setting | Not at the moment - from what that article states.
But im sure they will, or else everyone will start "opting in" to give paypal their dormant phone numbers. |
| allster101 | 06-04-2015 09:37 AM | Re: PayPal can robocall you with advertising from July I don't think you guys are realizing just how bad these new terms really are. This article explains it in detail.
Here's the first thing that's going to happen, straight from their new Privacy Policy page: Quote:
You consent to receive autodialed or prerecorded calls and text messages from PayPal at any telephone number that you have provided us or that we have otherwise obtained.
| And the cases where PayPal may robocall or robotext you: Quote: - notify you regarding your account
- troubleshoot problems with your account
- resolve a dispute
- collect a debt
- poll your opinions through surveys or questionnaires
- contact you with offers and promotions
- as otherwise necessary to service your account or enforce this User Agreement, our policies, applicable law, or any other agreement we may have with you
| And finally: Quote:
PayPal then states that users consent to receive SMS or text messages if they have provided a mobile telephone number, and that it may share phone numbers with affiliates or service providers.
| That's right: PayPal can sell your phone number to other companies, and they can robocall/robotext you too.
In addition to all that, standard telephone and text charges may apply.
It's unclear at this point in time if PayPal will provide opt-out options, and whether the new terms apply to all regions or only the US.
All of this will take effect on July 1st, when PayPal and eBay become separate companies.
Once again, I suggest reading this article which goes in more detail about this. PayPal: accept robocalls and automated texts, or close your account - gHacks Tech News |

| easy.bake.oven | 06-05-2015 01:16 AM | Re: PayPal can robocall you with advertising from July I though we would be OK in UK as we have Oftel and other governing bodies that don't allow that kind of business ethics.
Big shout to the Oftel crew and the UK stiff upper lip bods for not having that kind of behaviour X |
Re: PayPal can robocall you with advertising from July UK Regulations are certainly tough. Though sometimes too extreme. Some telephone providers in the UK provide free services to block nuisance calls, most allow for you to report them. Just comes to show nobody in the UK will really tolerate this sort of behaviour. |
| Haidukken | 06-05-2015 06:29 AM | Re: PayPal can robocall you with advertising from July Just read the news this morning and it seems that the general public are not very pleased.
Most likely they will either change it to TEXT harassment or they will require a person to phone them to opt out, so that they will at least get that one phonecall off you.
If the changes are only for US, then I'm a happy bunny. Unfortunately I'm sure they will come up with some sort of ****eroo for UK folks. |
Re: PayPal can robocall you with advertising from July I dont understand, maybe greed has got to them. If your generating billions in revenue, why risk losing your customers with annoying phone calls :S :S :S |

Probably a way to weed out "shady" accounts, have more control over the data and make the company as foolproof as possible and legit as possible, if they want to become something "more" in the future.
If they want to operate in different markets they need to make adjustments, to follow the financial regulations in different markets etc.
It's just something that they will do because it'll benefit them down the road. I doubt they are doing this to catch every dirty little stealther out there. |

Re: PayPal can robocall you with advertising from July Your right in a way, the stealth community does make up less than 0.007% (yes, that's how small we are) of the ebay/paypal community. That is very insignificant. |
