The fastest way to get your public facing IP address is through http://whatismyip.akamai.com/

It literally takes about 0.089 seconds or 89 milliseconds.

Something like this is good to use in a bash script on Linux with curl. The argument would be: curl -s http://whatismyip.akamai.com/

Example if you want to do automatic routing or something on Linux for multiple VPN connections instead of listing all the hosts.
