Changing useragent?

Has anyone used change useragent extension on Chrome or Firefox?
This would allow you to appear as though you have a different version of the browser and would change the reported OS you are using?

I thought this would be a great way of putting off the ebay hounds?

I thought I would ask before I tried.

Thanks.

Re: Changing useragent?

The issue with useragents or many other extensions for that matter is that they're not fully fool proof.

Example - you may be using a useragent which tells websites you're using a Mac OS. But then you might be using a screen resolution unique to Windows. (Just throwing a random example here). This will be a giveaway that somethings not right.

Now i'm not sure for ebay/paypal, but I know something like this on Amazon can warrant a new account to limited or even deleted right away.

These are things worth thinking about. ;)

@Play I was thinking the same.
I think I'll hold back for the moment.

yes, but you can still change agent for windows to windows for example, it would have same screen res, unless you amend it on each login (hassle but possible. Other thing is fonts stay the same, so uniquely downloaded fonts need removal.

fonts???
WTF
no one ever told me about that!!
i'm sure i didn't read that in the stealth guide?
why would a browser waste resources reading the font file list?

1. Because eBay nor PayPal look so far. So the stealth guide doesn't cover anything unnecessary.

2. A website would need to see what fonts your system has for it it display its site correctly.

You're diving into the intricate things that Amazon track...

Some tracking techniques you can see if a website is using through reverse engineering. But you're right, they could start tracking at any time, so it is a good idea to future proof yourself, but not to the degree you walk around with a tinfoil hat. :)

Personally, I segregate each account to each virtual machine, each with a different OS. That's how I run my accounts. Currently a new user account does suffice, but going forward, I know, should eBay improve its tracking techniques, my account's will already be ready.

But going into it too much... you'll never get round to actually selling on ebay, you'll just be engrossed in whether ebay are tracking you or not..

I said uniquely dowloaded fonts, stuff that is not coming with regular fonts on a computer (eg. a handwriting font you really like but not standard one)
- that is the precaution I meant.

From my understanding, those unique fonts shouldn't really pose an issue.

The only time a website knows you do or don't have a font installed is when they attempt to display text in that font, and your system/OS responds with whether or not the font is installed.

If you have super random fonts, i.e. handwriting font, unless eBay are using it on their website, they wont know whether you have it or not. For the most part web pages will use fairly generic fonts, i.e. those pre installed on major OS'.

Now if you went onto "delete" these generic / popular fonts, then that's when you could be more easily identified / tracked so to speak. :)

guys thanks for the replies.
very educated i am.

@Play some awesome advice in the last post. If one went to 'clean' up after discovering the font issues, then this action could be counteractive.

not very true
With some technics it's possible to read your fonts.

Check this website (you will see that you can get your System fonts):
https://panopticlick.eff.org

But you don't need to have it unique - its better to be similar to many machines than to be unique every time.

Also Possive OS Fingerprint is possible, let's say you are running Windows, and you change your useragent to Mac, using this technic, it's possible to say exactly you are not really running a MAC, using packet analysis.

There are many methods of browser Fingerprinting today and they are getting continuously better.

hard to say, never used it before so I don't know how it works exactly. In the next days I will take some time to have a closer look at what they offer.

The one paranoia I have about making things more "convenient" is that some times things go wrong.

I still like just switching from one user account to another.
So I choose the VPN IP for that particular account, then click switch account and voila.

It takes seconds and it's safest so far. I don't see a reason to do it a different way.
