| | | Vicvelcro | 09-14-2009 05:00 AM | Nah, yer fine with the router settings. I was just clearing up the confusion of network settings for you.
Bottom line: Your IP is dynamic, your router is PPPoE which is proper for DSL, you have a connection, your WAN IP is changing when you want it to.
All good. Just remember to reboot to get your new IP when you need it.
Just to be clear, whenever we discuss IP, we are referring to WAN IP, not any other kind. If we have to discuss one of the other IP addresses associated to a computer, we specify LAN, HFC, Public, Private, or whatever. If we just say 'IP' all by itself, assume we mean WAN IP. |
| Love-Hate-Ebay | 09-15-2009 04:16 AM | Thank you for clearing the IP issue,I never troubled myself to learn about IP until ebay suspended me.
My next step is tracking,add-on(cookies,flash cookies,history..etc)
you've mentioned somewhere else that you run an old version of firefox, just to let you know newer version comes with a good option private browsing(tool-private browsing)
Here's a link Private Browsing |
| TigerLord | 09-15-2009 06:12 AM | If you're going to be creating many accounts it's really worth the investment of a router, if only for the security barrier it provides as well. |
| Vicvelcro | 09-15-2009 05:03 PM | The newer version is very very buggy. Also, the private browsing doesn't work very well.
I use an older version by deliberate choice. I have great plug-ins that do far better than the new FF would *IF* it worked the way it is supposed to.
I highly encourage everyone to dump FF version 3.5.x and go back to 3.0.13 or 3.0.14 Quote:

| Claire Voyant | 09-15-2009 05:15 PM | Here's a confusing one! Mozilla Firefox has a different Live IP Address than AT&T has
when I go and do the DOS thing. Nothing matches
P.S. you guys are awesome! |
| Claire Voyant | 09-17-2009 06:53 PM | Mozilla Firefox gives me a different Live IP address that I get when I go to DOS and check the WAN & IP address. Live IP address matches nothing on the screen! Is that normal????
All 3 addresses are different from what Mozilla is showing me. Have also gone to the check my IP addres, they came up with the same live IP as Mozilla |
| bluemoon999 | 09-18-2009 03:06 PM | Are you using the "external ip" Add-ons in FF?
Outside world only can see the external IP that FF shows you down at the bottom right corner.
People don't see your other IPs LAN assigns to you. |
| alextrainer | 09-18-2009 03:57 PM | No luck changing IP I tried several ways to update my dynamic IP address with AT&T DSL with no luck.
1) I downloaded SMAC 2.0, got random MAC, updated after unplugging modem. replugged in - same IP.
2)tried these steps twice
Stage 1
•Step 1: Click on the 'Start' menu on the bottom left hand corner of the screen
•Step 2: Click on 'Run'
•Step 3: Type in 'command' and hit ok/press enter
Stage 2
You should now be on the MSDOS prompt screen
•Step 4: Type 'ipconfig /release' and press 'enter'
•Step 5: Type 'exit' and leave the MSDOS prompt screen
•Step 6: Right click on 'Network places' or 'My Network places' on your desktop
•Step 7: Click on 'properties'
Stage 3
You should now be on a screen entitled 'Local Area Connection' or similar.
•Step 8: Right click on 'Local Area Connection' and click 'Properties'
•Step 9: Double-click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' from the list under the 'General' tab
•Step 10: Click on 'Use the following IP address' under the 'General' tab
•Step 11: Now create your own IP address, it doesn't matter what it is, just fill the area up, just type loads of numbers until the field is full.
•Step 12: Press 'Tab' and the 'Subnet Mask' section should automatically be filled with default numbers.
•Step 13: Press the 'OK' button
•Step 14: Press the 'OK' button again.
Stage 4
You should now be back to the 'Local Area Connection' screen.
•Step 15: Right-click on 'Local Area Connection' again, and go back to properties.
•Step 16: Go back to the 'TCP/IP' settings
•Step 17: Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically'
•Step 18: Press 'OK'
•Step 19: Hit 'OK' again
•Step 20: Congratulations you now have a new IP address!!!
Didnt follow other instructions in thread since I have DSL w/modem and not cable modem. |
| Vicvelcro | 09-19-2009 03:42 AM | Re #28: All those IPs you see from 'DOS' are irrelevant. Those aren't the IP addresses the world sees for your connection. Try whatismyip.com ipburger.com and ipchicken.com
Those should all show the same IP and that is the one see by servers when you access sites.
Re #30: Those instructions change your local IP (the one for your NIC). That one is pointless to bother changing because only YOU can see that one anyhow. Similar to problem in post 28.
You need to change your WAN IP. Some people call it your EXTERNAL IP. |
| moloko | 09-22-2009 03:35 AM | To first post I would like to say that dynamic doesnt mean that you get address in hour or minutes, in my city ISP leased time is 6 month so if you want change IP address just call to ISP and ask them. |
| Vicvelcro | 10-09-2009 06:51 PM | Correct. Dynamic just means your IP *can* change. Doesn't mean it *will* change or even at any specific time.
BUT
Dynamic means that the IP can be forced to change, pretty much at the whim of the user. |

I have to do the same thing, switch off and then put it back on to get new ip address but i was thinking how can i go back to the previous ip address ? because i want to set up same ip address for each ebay/paypal account if you know what i mean? Also if you log on to ebay accounts/paypal using different ip address everytime, will that cause a problem?? |
| moloko | 02-21-2010 02:15 AM | Your chances to get same IP is very very low, I think it is near 0. I used some accounts with dynamic IP but quit that thing and dont use that any more. My paypal accounts was suspended but ebay worked. It is always better to use same IP all the time. | | All times are GMT -5. The time now is 05:09 PM. | |
