**DSL MODEM + LINKSYS ROUTER**- HERE'S How to change ip address!!

HI- Boy, this is NOT a post I thought I would ever make.. :)
I am the very LAST person to take time out fiddling with user control panel,e tc..
BUT-- I just got myself a New Linksys, N-1 PLUS Gadget-- and it looks like something out of Star Wars,, so thought I'd make the phone call to change the ip... (plus it was almost $300)...
Here's what the 2 technicians did from Verizon DSL + Linksys Tech:(NOTE-- if you have a diff dsl provider, this may still work)--
HERES THE SCOOP:
First- I called, told them my kids were banned from "Club Penguin"'+ they HAD to get back on.. Needless to say, my kids were in the background hooting + hollering, so the techs knew i was legit. :))

a.) LINKSYS-- open up IE, cleared address bar-- typed in my ROUTER ip address, mine was like 192.168.4.1
b.) got to Linksys admin screen, typed in my linksys router info --left user blank, and password was admin.
c.) on the main page--see LOCAL IP ADDRESS, he had me change to 10.10.10.1
d.) SAVE
e.) unplug power cord from router-wait 60 secs, plug back in
f.) I CHECKED IP BURGER--STILL THE SAME
g.) ok- now, Clicked on Security BLACK TAB--
h.) "UNCHECK" the Filter Anonymous Internet Requests..
i.) Went to main page-- look for "MTU"-- Select "Manual", (was AUTO/1500)--changed to MANUAL, 1400--SAVE-unplug Router, wait 60 sec, plug in..
j.) checked ip-- still same, but now Lan was diff, and the start/end ip was diff in the system..
k.) also changed the LEASE tiem for the DHCP..from 1 day..to -0- days, then ,-1- minute,saved..
l.) NOW VERIZON DSL --
m.) Go into 192.168.1.1, see control panel log in, admin, password=password
n.) Look for CONFIG, then DHCP
o.) CHANGE the starting IP, + ending IP-- (it will tell you if its outof the subnet range)-- anyhow-- i just basically GUESSED one--changed the last digits..
p.) SAVED
q.) Unplugged dsl modem for 60 sec, powered back on
r.) now- checked ipburger---SUCCESS...
s.) HOORAY!!!!!
(NOTE--- MAYBE SOME OF YOU TECHIE GUYS KNOW-- maybe some of those steps werent necess?? BUT anyhow-- this is my first....)--
GOOD LUCK+ I hope this HELPS someone out there :))

You are one amazing lady !

ivegotinfo 02-03-2008 10:50 PM

^ very true :D

but i thought with dsl you can change ip by just unplugging the modem for a minute... thats how mine works.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, maybe you have dsl that gives you a static ip. in that case, two thumbs up to the guide

ebayvictim 02-03-2008 10:59 PM

I have Bellsouth (AT&T). I spent over 6 hours this weekend on phone support having my ip changed to Dynamic instead of static. They charge extra for static but mine was initially set up that way without my request or me paying for it!!! go figure! :D

Now I just have to unplug the modem for a few seconds and plug it back in. Have done this 20+ times in the last 3 days and so far only once have received a duplicate IP. Thank goodness I read on here to keep a spreadsheet including what IP addresses have been used. So I just repeated and got a new IP.

Can anyone tell me how many IP addresses might be in the rotation for a local DSL modem??????

ivegotinfo 02-04-2008 08:34 AM

it all depends on the pool of ips that your isp has. they can have thousands, or hundreds of thousands, depending on how many subscribers they have.

Nice guide eBayhateluv. I like the part about IPBurger.com, one of my other sites for the people that don't know. :p

Thanks eBayhateluv,

I have a linksys router model # WRT54G v8 and I have tried the instructions that was given and still have the same IP address:( . If I connect the cable modem directly to the computer and unplug it for a moment and re-check IP CHICKEN I do get a new IP address. But when I reconnect the router it goes back to the old IP address.????

ebayvictim 02-24-2008 08:55 PM

linksys has good support. You should call them or your DSL provider. I've had to do this several times and one or the other was always able to fix my problem!

I did call them and they say that can only change the set up ip and not provider W?? address????

What should I ask when I call them

ebayvictim 02-24-2008 09:32 PM

I went thru this a few weeks ago with my DSL provider (AT&T) and my router (D-Link) Finally D-link told me AT&T was giving me the run-around and suggested I ask them to do a 3-way call with them. Amazing what happened when one couldn't blame the other!!!! Now my IP changes everytime I reboot the modem. Just keep after them. AT&T has been pretty good about helping me with my router settings, even though that's not their problem! FYI....I told them I had an issue with multiple accounts on ebay and that if I couldn't change my IP I would have to change my internet provider!!!

mrtag 02-24-2008 09:57 PM

I just called my provider ( cogeco cable) and they say that I would have to leave the modem unplug for 7 days and re-connect it and it might pick-up a new IP address...

ebayvictim 02-24-2008 10:10 PM

That sounds crazy. Why would 7 days be different than 10 seconds??? Did you call linksys???

I just got off the phone with linksys for the 5 time today and I finally got someone that new what I was talking about and was able to help change the IP address. So now I have a new IP address.

I played around for a while in the linksys setup page and I was so close to getting it that I was only 1 set away from doing it from what we done.

Thanks to all for your help....

ebayvictim 02-24-2008 10:43 PM

Glad you got it worked out. I understand how it is with tech support. Usually the first level (the one's that answer the phone) know very little and you have to go higher up!

Hey guys,

I seem to be very a hell of a time changing my IP. I have tried a bunch of methods but nothing seens to be working.

A) I have static IP
B) LINKSYS ROUTER

I believe this tutorial will not let you change your IP if you have a Static IP.

So any idea's on which method I can take a look at to finally get this IP changed?.

GreenBean 02-26-2008 06:02 AM

OK, now the time to go "tech". Call your IP techs and tell them you want to
change from static IP to dynamic IP. From the other users you will probably need
to ask to speak to someone other than the first person answering. Good Luck

That says it all!!!! Static IP means NEVER CHANGING!!!! Call your DSL people and get a dynamic ip! FYI, having a static ip usually means you're paying EXTRA for it on DSL!

kdline 02-29-2008 04:08 AM

I changed my ip by a very simple way. I downloaded software from hide-my-ip.com and it works! I paid $25 for that, good investment!

GreenBean 02-29-2008 04:19 AM

kdline, how long has this worked? Have you kept a log to ensure that the IP
is different each time?

lightbreeze 03-10-2008 11:57 AM

The aboved ebayhateluv's method not work for me on cable modem. IP remains the same. This really depends from ISP internet infrastructure configuration.

Itzabreeze 03-14-2008 10:55 PM

Hi Guys,

I am having alot of trouble changing my IP here. Basically my question is which address does ebay track?.

When I go to IP Chicken or IP Burger I get an ip address that I can not get to change for the life of me.

If I click:

Start
Control Pannel
Network Connections
Local Area Connection..... then "Support:. I get a different IP address.

-According to my interest provider I have a dynamic IP. (Appearently changes every 2-3 days)
-I called my internet provider and they told me to call Linksys reguarding changing my IP...Linksys basically told me they couldn't change it.

I've tryed almost every method to "change IP" but nothing is working. Which "IP address" does ebay track?. The IP Chicken/Burger one or the other one through my Local Area Connection.

Any ideas?

TotallyDisgusted 03-20-2008 09:19 PM

Having a heck-of-a-time changing IPs myself. Using cable modem & Linksys wireless router.

I can change IPs by disconnecting router & connecting PC direct to cablemodem but WOW...what a pain-in-the-tush to get that router to connect to internet & set-up again. There has to be an easier way :(

As mentioned by kdline in previous post...hide my ip is a cool little software program but will assign you an IP "somewhere" in the US. I am under the impression that would red flag Ebay...if you created an account in let's say "Florida" and your ip showed every-other-state every-other-day...this would look pretty suspicious.

ivegotinfo 03-20-2008 10:25 PM

the IP Burger - What is my IP Address? Find Your IP Address! one is the one you are trying to change.

if you guys dont want to do this so much, then get dialup or vpn - Hide IP address with SmartHide - i think its 10$ per month for a new IP
Welcome to WiTopia >> Where Freedom and Security Meet - 40$ for a whole year, but it always gives you a random ip every time you connect, and the ips are from i think washington only.

TotallyDisgusted 03-21-2008 12:18 PM

ivegotinfo -- with this "Hide IP address w/SpartHide" can you choose where your IP is from or is it random place?

I'm taking hide-my-ip.com for the three day trail as I type and so far so good. I like the way you can program it to generate a new ip every 10 minutes if you like. Basically, if i understand it, my ip address connects with their server and their server generates the ip address. It works on all the main sites. I can even yahoo email without a problem. I like it! Flat fee lifetime membership. In fact I had improved internet experience too.

ebayhateluv 03-21-2008 11:55 PM

HI, GUys: Anthro/ Smarthide is $10/mo. and it does give u a dedicated ip if u like.. I keep the same one ..for same acct..

TotallyDisgusted 03-22-2008 09:31 AM

Just installed "smarthide" the Free version...so far so good. In free version, it appears I can choose same IP over & over again...showing some consistency w/the lurking eyes of Ebay.

north1125 03-22-2008 11:05 PM

does smarthide give you a unique individual server to connect to with the paid version? It seems with the free version everybody connects to the same 5 or so servers, which i assume have been blacklisted. The IPs come up as possible proxies when using whatismyipaddress.com so beware.

cash415 05-07-2008 06:54 PM

Is SmartHide legit, meaning can they assign an IP address located in California? Since I am using a router and can't change my IP address with AT&T (unless I subscribe to a dynamic IP that cost about $50 with 5 different IP addresses), I am trying to find an alternate way so I can start selling on eBay again.

brokebackebay 07-03-2008 01:31 PM

Itzabreeze - I have the same set up and was encountering the same issues. Don't pay any attention to the ip you find under the control panel thing. The ipburger.com ip is the one you want to see changing. All it turned out I needed to do was to yank the cord on my modem, let it stay out for about a minute, then plug it back in. And, bingo, new ip as shown by ipburger.com I'm also changing Windows users for each new account so the cookie monster can leave whatever cookies they need to leave to make 'em feel better, although Mozilla Firefox is clearing them out everytime I sign out.
Good luck!

brokebackebay 07-03-2008 01:35 PM

I found it wasn't necessary to do all of that plugging and unplugging. I just wasn't leaving the modem unplugged long enough at first. I takes mine about one minute. But all I do is unplug the power to the modem and then replug it after a minute or so. It is working every single time to change the ip.

dylandonovan 07-05-2008 03:28 AM

does hide my ip have tons of ips or what and can i change whenever in a click of a button i want one to get good gear on a wow private server by voteing and not actually having to do the 400 dollar donation and ya :):)

Hey guys i need Help with changing IP Address?

I was wondering how i can change my IP address using a wireless Netgear Router with Comcast Cable Internet But everytime i unplug my modem and router for different amounts of time I test it with IP Burger and it always shows the same IP when i check my IP?? if anyone could help me i would really appreciate it thanks PS also i got a dynamic IP address

pinkharo 11-06-2008 02:56 AM

The IP doesn't change mainly because of the service provider and the way they set it up. Even with the dynmaic ip you need to first have the assigned ip released and that you need to turn off the modem until some other people takes that ip. Otherwise it will get renewed again. Either change service providers (might still not work), use a dial-up (new ip when ever you login) or as others have mentioned programs that changes your ip.

tbh222 10-08-2009 12:31 AM

stop using hide your ip softwares , they are nothing but like proxy , ebay tracks your ip and when you have too many different ip , esp they are from different locations ,

same results!!!
