Default **DSL MODEM + LINKSYS ROUTER**- HERE'S How to change ip address!!

HI- Boy, this is NOT a post I thought I would ever make..
I am the very LAST person to take time out fiddling with user control panel,e tc..
BUT-- I just got myself a New Linksys, N-1 PLUS Gadget-- and it looks like something out of Star Wars,, so thought I'd make the phone call to change the ip... (plus it was almost $300)...
Here's what the 2 technicians did from Verizon DSL + Linksys Tech:(NOTE-- if you have a diff dsl provider, this may still work)--
HERES THE SCOOP:
First- I called, told them my kids were banned from "Club Penguin"'+ they HAD to get back on.. Needless to say, my kids were in the background hooting + hollering, so the techs knew i was legit. )

a.) LINKSYS-- open up IE, cleared address bar-- typed in my ROUTER ip address, mine was like 192.168.4.1
b.) got to Linksys admin screen, typed in my linksys router info --left user blank, and password was admin.
c.) on the main page--see LOCAL IP ADDRESS, he had me change to 10.10.10.1
d.) SAVE
e.) unplug power cord from router-wait 60 secs, plug back in
f.) I CHECKED IP BURGER--STILL THE SAME
g.) ok- now, Clicked on Security BLACK TAB--
h.) "UNCHECK" the Filter Anonymous Internet Requests..
i.) Went to main page-- look for "MTU"-- Select "Manual", (was AUTO/1500)--changed to MANUAL, 1400--SAVE-unplug Router, wait 60 sec, plug in..
j.) checked ip-- still same, but now Lan was diff, and the start/end ip was diff in the system..
k.) also changed the LEASE tiem for the DHCP..from 1 day..to -0- days, then ,-1- minute,saved..
l.) NOW VERIZON DSL --
m.) Go into 192.168.1.1, see control panel log in, admin, password=password
n.) Look for CONFIG, then DHCP
o.) CHANGE the starting IP, + ending IP-- (it will tell you if its outof the subnet range)-- anyhow-- i just basically GUESSED one--changed the last digits..
p.) SAVED
q.) Unplugged dsl modem for 60 sec, powered back on
r.) now- checked IPBurger---SUCCESS...
s.) HOORAY!!!!!
(NOTE--- MAYBE SOME OF YOU TECHIE GUYS KNOW-- maybe some of those steps werent necess?? BUT anyhow-- this is my first....)--
GOOD LUCK+ I hope this HELPS someone out there )

^ very true :D

but i thought with dsl you can change ip by just unplugging the modem for a minute... thats how mine works.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, maybe you have dsl that gives you a Static IP. in that case, two thumbs up to the guide

I have Bellsouth (AT&T). I spent over 6 hours this weekend on phone support having my ip changed to Dynamic instead of static. They charge extra for static but mine was initially set up that way without my request or me paying for it!!! go figure! :D

Now I just have to unplug the modem for a few seconds and plug it back in. Have done this 20+ times in the last 3 days and so far only once have received a duplicate IP. Thank goodness I read on here to keep a spreadsheet including what IP addresses have been used. So I just repeated and got a new IP.

Can anyone tell me how many IP addresses might be in the rotation for a local DSL modem??????

it all depends on the pool of ips that your isp has. they can have thousands, or hundreds of thousands, depending on how many subscribers they have.

Nice guide eBayhateluv. I like the part about IPBurger.com, one of my other sites for the people that don't know.

Thanks eBayhateluv,

I have a linksys router model # WRT54G v8 and I have tried the instructions that was given and still have the same IP address:( . If I connect the cable modem directly to the computer and unplug it for a moment and re-check IP CHICKEN I do get a new IP address. But when I reconnect the router it goes back to the old IP address.????

linksys has good support. You should call them or your DSL provider. I've had to do this several times and one or the other was always able to fix my problem!

I went thru this a few weeks ago with my DSL provider (AT&T) and my router (D-Link) Finally D-link told me AT&T was giving me the run-around and suggested I ask them to do a 3-way call with them. Amazing what happened when one couldn't blame the other!!!! Now my IP changes everytime I reboot the modem. Just keep after them. AT&T has been pretty good about helping me with my router settings, even though that's not their problem! FYI....I told them I had an issue with multiple accounts on ebay and that if I couldn't change my IP I would have to change my internet provider!!!

I just called my provider ( cogeco cable) and they say that I would have to leave the modem unplug for 7 days and re-connect it and it might pick-up a new IP address...

I just got off the phone with linksys for the 5 time today and I finally got someone that new what I was talking about and was able to help change the IP address. So now I have a new IP address.

I played around for a while in the linksys setup page and I was so close to getting it that I was only 1 set away from doing it from what we done.

Thanks to all for your help....

Glad you got it worked out. I understand how it is with tech support. Usually the first level (the one's that answer the phone) know very little and you have to go higher up!

Hey guys,

I seem to be very a hell of a time changing my IP. I have tried a bunch of methods but nothing seens to be working.

A) I have Static IP
B) LINKSYS ROUTER

I believe this tutorial will not let you change your IP if you have a Static IP.

So any idea's on which method I can take a look at to finally get this IP changed?.

OK, now the time to go "tech". Call your IP techs and tell them you want to
change from Static IP to dynamic IP. From the other users you will probably need
to ask to speak to someone other than the first person answering. Good Luck

That says it all!!!! Static IP means NEVER CHANGING!!!! Call your DSL people and get a dynamic ip! FYI, having a static ip usually means you're paying EXTRA for it on DSL!

I changed my ip by a very simple way. I downloaded software from hide-my-ip.com and it works! I paid $25 for that, good investment!

kdline, how long has this worked? Have you kept a log to ensure that the IP
is different each time?
