| | | DogFacedBoy | 07-31-2008 04:30 PM | AOL proxy - does your WAN IP address change for EBAY purposes? Not necessarily Was installing some new software and computer re-booted as a result. I went to go log into AOL so I could access my ebay account (I have been doing it this way successfully for eight months now) I go to check my IP in AOL and it comes up the same as my regular DSL.
I've shut down and restarted it like 3 or 4 times and the same results each time. Could it be that AOL has quit using a proxy?
I'm afraid to sign in any other way right now, I have like 70 FBs at 100% and I'm afraid to raise any red flags. Just tried again and finally got AOL to sign on with the proxy. Anyone have any ideas of why it would take 4 or 5 tries? I used IP Burger and other IP sites and they all gave my regular ISP DSL IP. BTW I was actually logged in because I could compose new email, etc. This just has me a little confused this time |
| aspkin | 07-31-2008 05:06 PM | Unknown DogFacedBoy, other users have reported something similar happening to them, but they eventually figured it out over a few tries. AOL has a history of 'sucking'. :p |
| doughboykilla | 07-31-2008 09:47 PM | I just check my aol and it gives me a porxy |
whats the problem with not using dial up?
has anyone gotten in trouble using the normal broadband?
seems to me like thousands of ebay users nationwide are using aol and broadband. |
| adl0816 | 08-09-2008 07:24 PM | Using AOL Proxy I've tried using the AOL browser as a proxy. Everytime before I go on eBay I check my IP address with IPBurger and it shows up as something different. But when I make changes to my eBay account (such as changing the password,) eBay recognizes my original home IP address instead of the proxy one. Am I compromised? |
| ebayhateluv | 08-09-2008 11:22 PM | HI:
I use aol all the time..
first-- I clear cookies, using cookie cleaner, then i clean in explorer,
then when aol opens, go to security/options, clear tracks.. |
| adl0816 | 08-10-2008 12:07 AM | Yeah I clear my Firefox private data, run CCleaner, and use Objective to clear my flash cookies. Then I log into AOL 9.1 and check my IP address with IPBurger before I proceed to logging into my eBay/PayPal accounts. Am I doing something wrong or using the wrong AOL browser? |
I have broadband and an AOL icon 9.0 already installed on my computer, so I opened new Aol email and signed into AOL as guest. Checked IP, always the same. I think that free AOL service does not work for changing the IPs. I believe I need to sign up for it at 9.95 a month via my cable service. I don't mind signing up if this will guarantee a new IP every time I use it. Does anyone know if that's the case? |
| victorrocks | 08-10-2008 09:34 AM | I have an aol paid account, after getting the "abusing ebay policy" for using "hidemyip2008" that appears to be the proxy server that got me shut down, i decided to just use the aol browser. The only thing i noted was it was asking me to accept cookies in IE, which i have done but i do delete before and after every visit to ebay. I check my IP and it is different everytime.
I hope this keeps me on ebay for a while longer than 48 hours the last time round. |
| adl0816 | 08-10-2008 08:00 PM | So does that mean using AOL proxy is a dead end? |
| adl0816 | 08-11-2008 07:19 PM | Well I was able to change my home IP address using the old "unplug your modem and leave overnight" trick. Now I can finally get back on eBay without having to worry. :) |
| doughboykilla | 08-11-2008 07:38 PM | im useing aol right now what is the ip posted?
dose it start with 70.178? if so then thats my home ip but if not then its a proxy |
Well, as it seems not to be certain, I may just subscribe to AOL broadband for 9.95 a month and see if it works for me or not. If I have to use dial up to initiate new IP, than I have to first sign up for land line, right? I have 2 cell phones, one from work and 1 my own, private. I did just fine without land line for almost 3 years now... |
Anyone else subscribed to AOL broadband and gets a new IP every time using it? Thanks.. |
| doughboykilla | 08-11-2008 08:44 PM | i use aol 9.0VR
and its free the one i use i dont have a aol account just a aol email thats it |
| doughboykilla | 08-11-2008 08:49 PM | ok im posting from IE right now it should have my real ip |
| doughboykilla | 08-11-2008 08:50 PM | Now im on aol 9.0VR the ip should say 64.12.116.77 which is the aol proxy |
| becca073 | 08-15-2008 03:09 PM | I stick with AOL dial up cause I get the different IP address everytime. Too bad the other way doesn't still change your IP cause dial-up is soo slow. But I go with what is safest for me. |
| Exeneva | 08-16-2008 12:57 AM | I've personally had bad experiences with AOL, especially broadband. |
| becca073 | 08-18-2008 05:55 PM | Okay this is very strange..I just went onto AOL dialup and checked my IP address. Its now giving me my regular IP address, no proxy? I just noticed this today. Yesterday I got a proxy. |
| NowWhat | 08-20-2008 10:54 PM | Modee: is there a way to check? Modee said: "Seems like it sometimes did not work in the first place. People were checking their IP address with What Is My IP Address? - Lookup IP, Hide IP, Change IP, Trace IP and more...
and the like, and thinking they were okay, when sometimes their ISP's WAN IP address was flowing through to EBAY and getting them busted."
So, is there any way for us to get a correct check on our IP, other than asking you what is coming through at your end?
Thanks, Modee |
| DogFacedBoy | 09-05-2008 07:51 PM | Okay, posting this message via AOL Browser with sign in for an AOL account. It is possible to use the AOL browser without signing in. If you do this you WILL show the same IP address as you IE |
| DogFacedBoy | 09-05-2008 07:57 PM | Now posting via IE.
Interesting when I switched from AOL to IE the cookie stayed and I was already signed in. It is always advisable to clear cookies when going from one account to the other even if switching browsers |
| DogFacedBoy | 09-05-2008 11:17 PM | Obviously I do nothing different when using IE. As for AOL I have an email account and have downloaded the AOL browser.
If I access the web using the Aol browser it does nothing to change the IP address. In order for it to work you have to actually sign in to AOL and I do so by checking my email by using the AOL icon on the top of the browser. This will then log you in using your AOL ID and password. You will then be accessing the web via the AOL proxy.
I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS verify my IP address through one of the site listed here in the forums to make sure that I am accessing everything through the AOL proxy and not my regular IP. |

Thank you for the advice.
But I don't see a AOL icon on the top of my browser.
Please advise how I obtain that icon.
BTW: I use an Apple Mac. So what works for a PC may not work for a Mac.
Thanks. |
| SheerGold | 10-15-2008 12:13 PM | AOL does NOT hide your IP address from eBay. THAT'S NOW PROVEN I did as is advised. Signed into my AOL account. I had cleared cookies, etc before doing so.
Yes, for sure I find I have a different IP address.
BUT, HERE'S THE CATCH!!
That IP address is MERELY a WEAK CLOAK of my real IP address.
Simply doing an IP reverse lookup I identified the location of that IP address as EXACTLY the same as my internet provider!!
Doing this repeatedly. i.e. logging out. deleting cookies, etc. logging in. repeating the procedure. EVERY TIME there was the same problem. Every time the new IP address was transparent as far as reverse look-up software was concerned and it identified my isp.
Thus eBay will easily be able find your real IP address by using some sophisticated reverse software.
Whether they go to that length all the time is not known. But maybe they do when there is excess computing power available, like at quiet times. |
| laslunas | 10-15-2008 05:31 PM | I am also trying to run throug AOL version 7.0. Can someone tell me what my IP address is with this post? Are the first two numbers 63.? |
| laslunas | 10-15-2008 05:32 PM | and now my IP address in this post not using AOL? |
| GreenBean | 10-15-2008 05:39 PM | laslunas:
in your first post start no* is 205
in your second post start no* is 63 |
| laslunas | 10-15-2008 05:45 PM | so that mean I am good to go using AOL? Ebay & Paypal do not like my 63 IP address! |
| clueless | 10-22-2008 02:44 PM | Sooo...what is the solution? |
| Savannah | 12-05-2008 11:44 PM | I read all kinds of threads everywhere and here....I use and pay for AOL broadband and kept a log of all the proxy IP addresses I get with IPBurger. I'm in Jersey but I get IP addresses from Pa, Maine, Canada, Kansas, Virginia and NY. I seems from my logs it works in rotations and how long I wait to sign into AOL. I tested it again with Firefox and always got the same IP so I no longer use that. AOL seems the way to go. I have it down to a science and with Auctiva I feel my 6 accounts are safe up and running knock wooden head! |
| imthatguy | 12-08-2008 07:03 PM | any solution yet? |
| Savannah | 12-09-2008 11:45 PM | Interesting thing happened here today. We had a major blackout in our county for hours. Happened in the middle of listing as a matter of fact. BOOM everything went down and pitch black. When power was resumed I thought let me check my IP address for giggles. I got a different one through Comcast! Different through IP Config in my computer! Comcast assigned me a new one! So with AOL and a new IP I'm getting up early and opening a few new accounts to fester for the future. An exploding generator opened a few new doors for me! And candlelight wasn't so bad either. |
| eseller | 12-30-2008 01:53 AM | Tonight I signed into AOL via bring your own access because I had to check some Ebay stuff to help out a relative of mine.
I was logged onto the internet thru my wireless laptop card which is NOT what I use to log onto my own Ebay account and I was on a different computer but I wanted to use the AOL as an additonal layer of protection since in no way do I want this person's EBay account linked to mine.
So....I checked my IP on IPBurger and I had an AOL IP address.
Then I went to Geobytes. I had an AOL IP address.
Then I sent an email from my AOL account to one of my Yahoo accounts.
I checked the full headers of the email I received in Yahoo and I had an AOL address in the headers of the email there was no other IP coming thru.
I was safe either way because I took the precaution of using the wireless card to connect anyway - but after reading this, I still think I won't depend on AOL as a proxy unless I dial in.
I still hope Ebay only saw the AOL IP. |
| simogold | 12-30-2008 04:09 AM | the best thing to do is to test:
1- create an Ebay account with new infos to test using your internet provider through AOL
2- write down the AOL IP.
3- few minutes later after the activation, try to log in to your account from AOL using the I forgot my password pretending that.
4- Ebay will send you an email or 2 emails to your email that you changed your password with the IP address that you used.
5-you are going to see that they know your IP from your provider also.
i hope this info will help.
