wow, that's odd. What country are you from?

ifreewillie 04-30-2007 01:59 PM

Actually, ebay will request a credit card verification if you have created an ebay account on that particular ip address. (i.e. first time will be no verfication, but if you try to create another right away, it will ask for it). But then again, I was using yahoo/hotmail emails.

FeeBay Balling 05-01-2007 03:37 PM

As Modee said AOL is free and ebay does not recognize it any differently as least right now. But what I do notice is that wehn you sign up for a new account thru aol when the register page loads it grabs the header information as your email address is already prefilled by ebay.

Jonas 05-01-2007 11:01 PM

How much info does ebay grab from you if you register using AOL?

Jonas 05-12-2007 01:14 AM

Theories why????? More than half buyers don't have working email address

More than half buyers don't have working email addresses. They have emails with spam filters or something else that deletes or hides all incoming email. Or else they never check their email and only check ebay messaging. Often they always check ebay messaging (which is something I ignore because as a seller I'll have tons in there and it's very slow to read email on ebay's website as opposed to predownloaded emails).

So anyone want to take a crack in theory as to why this is?

aspkin 05-12-2007 02:07 AM

I send emails to past customers which are in the tens of thousands every week. And about 1/4 of the people ever open a message that takes me at least an hour to create usually more. I feel your pain!

The thing with eBay is, eBay sends a lot of spam to a person's inbox already, and me personally I used to miss messages from sellers and buyers that directly responded to me in this way. I usually missed it with the rest of eBay spam I had. I simply ignored it. But that's just me.

Jonas 05-12-2007 02:33 AM

People have to turn off the preferences to stop ebay from spamming them.

aspkin 05-12-2007 04:51 AM

Most people don't mess with it though. :/

Which email hosts will not prompt ebay to ask for CC#

It seems some will and some won't. TIA

jamesy 05-15-2007 04:03 AM

from my experience you get asked for a credit card around 1 in 10 times you register regardless of which email you use. it's something they do randomly I think

Ballsack 05-15-2007 11:02 AM

I see. So it's not normal practice cause I was asked for it by simply opening an account. I guess I'll try again.

FeeBay Balling 05-15-2007 02:11 PM

RCreating accounts used to go thru like clockwork in the past (I use AOL for this) Recently they have been asking for CC info to verify your identity... Not really a big worry as you get a simon card ahead of time for this.

The real issue will be what happens if they want you to verify yourself using a SS#.. then that is going to be messy. I steps to get ahead of that go to the irs website and request a TIN # at least this way you can have a number ready.

Also open up a business and get a tax ID number.

Jonas 05-15-2007 06:52 PM

You get as many TIN#'s as you want?

That's fine by me. I believe yahoo asks for SSN regardless of whether you're a seller or buyer. All this will do is drive up the competition to the point where you don't have to rely on ebay in the future.

Can EBAY track you when you open emails? NO.

I have about 3-4 ebay accounts I use at the same time and I check my emails using outlook express. I do set it to read in TEXT mode but when I hit REPLY the message turns into Rich Text/HTML. Some of these email accounts are from my suspended user ID's (b/c I still have customers on them I need to keep them active)

I have opened Ebay emails/replied to Ebay emails when it is rich text/full of "cookies" I guess and have stayed active for more than 3-4 months on Ebay at a time.

I can't figure out if checking your HTML/RICH text emails on outlook express will result in suspension (esp. when working on several ID's at once) ? My own experience says that it doesn't, or if it does they are slow to catch on...

Anyone else thinks the same? (that checking different ebay accounts emails using outlook express and reading them in rich text doesn't affect you)

Chris Hanson 08-02-2007 10:32 PM

Look i can tell you that as long as you erase your cookies after you check your email your fine. I have images enabled and I check my email with 4 diffrent ebay accounts on the same ip , but 1 got suspended but my other accounts have been still up and running.

So just erase everything before you log back in

new ebay client to old ebay email address?!?

I have a new account and I only ever open email from ebay on their site. I've been going back and forth with this one woman over an item. Well, today I opened up my email account that is linked to a suspended account. This woman wrote an email to me there!! What the?!? I have NO idea how she got a hold of that address. I didn't open it, but i'm pretty freaked out. There was also an invoice notice from ebay that I did not open (I figure that is standard email to all accounts they have on file). I checked all pp and new ebay accounts and NOWHERE does this old email exist. Any ideas?

aspkin 08-08-2007 03:32 AM

If you reply directly to a notice from eBay that you received a new message, the reply will be sent to the buyer or seller's email address. Directly meaning from your email address you did the reply. That's what this lady did. I hate when buyers do this.

Click on link in EB email using AOL?

ok.. so we all have been using AOL's browser for IP protection. great....

my questions is this: if I click on an EB link (to an specific EB item listed) in an email from PP sent to my gmail address (which is the webmail i use with my new EB seller account).. and then an new AOL web-browser opens to EB, that shows the EB item that I clicked on, and shows me as logged in as the seller ... will that expose my real IP to EB? or is it still cloaked in AOL browser's proxy?

Of course, I am logged into the same EB seller account earlier in AOL browser. I think thats why when the new AOL web browser window opened to dispaly that specific EB item, it also showed me as logged in as the seller. However, I don;t think they can link me to any other account that i have, since I delete "ALL FOOTPRINT" in AOL always after each session, and only log into one account each session, so everything should all match up. Im just concerned about the real IP vs AOL IP problem in viewing and clicking on links in EB and PP emails in gmail.

the problem with gmail is that it does blocking of the images, but does not disable links in emails. I wish there was some way of doing that. if anyone knows of any good ways, please let me know.

Thanks to all forum gurus. You guys have been great help in understanding how EB and PP works.

Some great questions.
I think there is an option in gmail to "display all images" or similar

You are using the AOL browser to access EB...I have an AOL email that is just registered at EB.

What is the procedure for going out into cyberspace with the AOL browser? Do you have to pay for this feature?

Thanks

JackNoMore 08-28-2007 10:27 AM

I wouldn't do it. I believe this is how I had one of my accounts suspended a while back. AOL is good for some things, but I wouldn't use them for direct email contact.
