Default eBay Garage to scan your computer for malware.

eBay: Let us look inside your PC - Protecting Enterprise Data at Silicon.com

eBay: Let us look inside your PC

Shuts the Garage doors on malware

Published: 23 February 2009 17:30 GMT by Nick Heath

From this year, eBay will open the doors on a new site offering malware scanning to its users as part of a raft of new features aimed at beating the phishers and virus writers.

The site, eBay Garage, will run an embedded application that will scan users' PCs for any viruses or spyware using up to date malware signatures.

If any malware is detected the user will be directed to the site of a security vendor that provides products to clean up the machine.

eBay is partnering with two, as yet unnamed, security companies on the project and the site is expected to launch imminently, eBay Marketplaces chief information security officer Dave Cullinane revealed.

Cullinane told silicon.com that Garage and other technologies will help combat the recent "appalling" growth in malicious code, which has seen criminals focus their efforts on compromising the machines belonging to the site's users.

"Phishing seems to be tailoring off a little bit but the growth in the amount of malicious code out there is appalling," he said.

"As we are getting better at shutting off opportunities for criminals to exploit what is happening on our side they are moving to try and attack the customer end."

This year will also see eBay introduce Trustyear, technology aimed at fighting spoof eBay sites that steal users' logins or financial details.

The technology will look for any attempts to redirect users from eBay onto a spoof site and block the connection.

eBay has already introduced a number of security measures such as making user IDs anonymous when bidding, and Cullinane said eBay has seen the number of account takeovers, where a fraudster hijacks an eBay account, fall.

Cullinane also said the two-factor authentication that has been introduced at eBay-owned online payment service PayPal is proving to be popular among its users.

According to Cullinane, eBay is also considering introducing a federated identity system in future, which could simplify the log-in process by moving towards a single login across eBay and other sites and services.

Cullinane was speaking to silicon.com following the publication of a report by RSA and the Security for Business Innovation Council into innovation in security, examining the information security challenges created by the current economic crisis.

While security will remain a "major focal point" for eBay, Cullinane said the company's security spend will be flat this year, amid the current climate of economic uncertainty.

Last October eBay reported third quarter revenues of $2.12bn and revealed it was to cut a tenth of its workforce.

"We are being as conservative as we can. I cannot let everybody have all the training that they want and we have had to curtail some things but we are moving along quite strongly," Cullinane said.

"We are always looking about three to five years ahead, to look for the technology that we need to stay ahead of the bad guys," he said.

I heard that!

Even if it did freeze, thaw, and refreeze over, I still wouldn't let them in.

All that talk about malware...

What about the spyware their going to install while their "scanning" your machine.

They must really think we're all idiots.

Such a wonderful offer.NOT. ebay never gives up trying to brainwash the innocent. How cunning to use 'garage' when there is that mac program also called cunning. Big trap again.
Hope nobody on this forum falls for this.

You think they'll still leave the beacons up. Boy, I hope so. I love having them track me.

I am hoping they can come up with another one too!

This reminds me of that programming whiz whose job it was to keep the Vegas slot machines safe from manipulation. After awhile, he couldn't resist temptation and programmed a few little extras that allowed him to hit the jackpots.

I'll keep my own computer clean, eBay, but thank you very much for asking.

I have nothing but GREAT things to say about NOD32. It's has a very small footprint, and doesn't use much of your resources. It also catches things that most of the big name AV packages don't.

Any reference to aspkin would be malware,...
so would be CCLEANER...

Gee, I wonder why the scan session is sending a 15 MB report back to eBay...

eBay scanner is here to help...

Don't laugh, it will become compulsory to use eBay scanner just like it is to use Paypal.

So , to recap: to sell, you'll need:
10 feedback,
Paypal as sole payment venue,
and a scan with eBay anti-malware.

The sad part is there will be someone, whether it be a newbie or not, that will allow them to do so.
Very true! Cunning is the software and "yes" the garage door will be shut if they are allowed to scan!

To EVERYONE who reads this thread.....please do not allow give permission to can.
