You can provide a stealth UTR number. It has to follow a formula with check digit so can't just be made up. You can find UTR checker online to make sure it is right format.

Alternatively you can register a UK company. You get a new UTR if setting up as a business (individuals have just one for life). Bit of a pain going this route (fees to companies house, filing accounts, business bank account) but obviously worth it if making good money.

Any update here? I've seen somebody had put NI number in on reddit, wether the account will be banned soon or not is a different story. I mean is it possible for Etsy to be able to check the names on a UTR or NI number? I dont think they can? Obviously HMRC will but i declare all my tax / vat properly anyway in my own name, it's just the account details are not in my own name.

My issue is i have 2 accounts, one in my uncles name as a stealth account, and one in my name so both accounts are seperate, there only asking for UTR on my uncles account and i have 9 days, i fear if i put my UTR in there and the account gets shut then when it eventually asks for it on my own account that could get banned also.

At the moment im thinking i might just try my NI number and see if it accepts and see what happens then i have my UTR for when my own account gets the prompt. I really don't want to lose my stealth account though as this one gets the most sales

I put a random UTR number in and it seemed to accept it. With the poor Etsy support I doubt whether they will ever check it? If there checking is as good as there customer support I might get away with it

You know that HMRC will probably contact your uncle when Etsy submit the info to them?

I had it this week. Had the option of supplying NI or UTR. It said I had two weeks to do this or I would stop receiving payouts. I would then have 60 days to provide the info or my shop would be placed into holiday mode.

I supplied NI and it all went through OK. Only a matter before other marketplaces do the same. I'm guessing ebay and Amazon will wait until next year for sellers who created their accounts before this year, due to the extra year they have to provide the info for existing customers.

was this on a stealth account? did the name on the etsy account match the name of the NI number holder?

If you got away with it that's great.

At this point they'll only check if the account got flagged somehow.
