Direct Checkout with integrated Paypal

All new accounts will have to have Direct Checkout now in the USA. No more standalone paypal. Need to link a bank account and verify with part of ssn.

Just saw this news on ecommercebytes and the etsy blog.

Previous stand alone Paypal accounts are all good tho. May need to do some opt outing, so research into that for your own accounts.

Guessing they are trying to get rid of Paypal and have all payments go through Etsy.

All happening in Oct. Gotta have that 4th quarter growth. So lame.

I assume this applies to Etsy only and has nothing to do with ebay.

Etsy only.

Etsy made some kind of deal to where it will accept Paypal through direct checkout. So buyers can pay using paypal even if a seller does not have a paypal account.

The change is a little confusing, but it is probably to keep all transactions in the etsy ecosystem. Also, etsy can collect all personal data on the person using the marketplace.

Hmmm...time to get my own website started. Been putting it off for too long.

Need to enter the bank account details. Then verify identity with last 4 digits.
That is what happened last time I tried to register for Direct checkout.

Also any new accounts will not have any money deposited in a Paypal account. All payments from buyers through Direct Checkout with Paypal go into your Direct Checkout fund.

That has always been the case. Direct Checkout is a merchant account service provided by etsy.

Where did you see that they will ban standalone Paypal and force everyone to sign up for Direct Checkout?

All previous store with paypal standalone are fine. But from now on, all new sellers will have to sign up with direct checkout only!

Where is the proof of that? Did etsy say that?

Here is the info with some links to etsy as well
ecommercebytes
Etsy Makes Checkout with PayPal Mandatory in New Shops

New accounts will not be able to have standalone paypal. Current accounts can still have standalone accounts. If you were planning on opening a stealth with stand alone paypal, not going to happen.

Re: Direct Checkout with integrated Paypal

Oh yeah, thanks for the link. That explains it more clearly than the other info I found.

Basically, it means that stealth accounts will not be possible in the US anymore. Canada, maybe. Since most etsy business doesn't really need a accessible address, not the end of the world, but it will complicate things significantly for people who ship merchandise and don't just operate digital download only stores.

I have heard about the canada stealth being a possibility. Has anyone in the USA made a stealth etsy account with standalone paypal?

You can do it no problem. The issue becomes shipping physical items. Would you just use a separate system like stamps.com and pop in the tracking number manually, and hope etsy doesn't notice it isn't being shipped from Canada? Fewer sales anyway since people won't want to deal with what they will think is international shipping.

Let me just tell you this...ecommercebytes is a place of n00bs. They do not practice ste.alth. All they are good for is news updates and aggregation.

You never had success entering an EIN's last four with a matching business name?

Re: Direct Checkout with integrated Paypal

Anyone have any luck? I'm going to make a fresh EIN and hope for the best when trying to open a new shop. It was easier before going Paypal - adding TAX ID after shop opened - DC. Now, I don't know if the same thing will work since it's DC first. Any advice?

ovidiu 10-05-2015 12:27 PM

Re: Direct Checkout with integrated Paypal

EIN? That does NOT work for direct checkout. I'm guessing unknown5454 is hinting at some backdoor approach to circumvent the DC signup process. I've read of such things on the etsy boards as well, but nothing definitive.

Re: Direct Checkout with integrated Paypal

Wanted to add that it probably is not a problem shipping from the USA if located in another country. Etsy allows fulfillment in their terms of service. Design in one country, ship in another.

ovidiu 10-05-2015 03:39 PM

Re: Direct Checkout with integrated Paypal

Question is how does that fulfillment option affect the payment types you are forced to sign up for?

Re: Direct Checkout with integrated Paypal

I think I remember trying to do a Canada address with US bank account for direct checkout, and it asked for SSN/etc.
