new flu strain

its spread to US and some case in London now, may be a complete non-event like the avian flu was few years back

yaw1800 04-26-2009 10:45 AM

yes i've read about this also.. it could cause a huge issue with Cinco de Mayo coming up in Mexico in a few days...

Swine Flu Empties Streets

Werfella 04-26-2009 12:43 PM

Its sympoms aren't much different from a normal flu. Not sure why it's raised so much fuss. I just don't like the name. swine = gagging. :> (where's the gagging emoticon when you need it?)

yaw1800 04-26-2009 01:17 PM

its a new strain, different strains mean different causes.. the strain out in mexico is killing dozens of people ..as opposed to the strains found here in NY that are just causing regular flu symptoms..
this swine strain is also causing respiratory issues && the US has officially declared a public health emergency.. pretty scary is you think about how fast its spreading

Werfella 04-26-2009 01:28 PM

Wow, my source of info sucked. (slap on hand for posting before researching). I really had no clue it was that bad in some areas. No wonder it's getting so much attention. Thanks for the eye-opener Yaw

aspkin 04-27-2009 12:27 AM

Yes, if it continues to spread rapidly.. it could mean big trouble for millions of people..

I'm watching this very closely.

Swine Flu Panic

Vicvelcro 04-27-2009 01:01 AM

I'm following the whole thing. Kinda suspicious that it's such a big deal. Why is Homeland Security involved? Why all the hullaballoo?

Mexico City has what (?) 20 million people and 1600 reported cases with ~100 fatalities. That's .008% population ill, and .0005% deceased.

US has ~300 million people and 20 reported cases with 0 fatal. .0000067% affected and .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000% deceased.

More people choked to death laughing at some stupid joke out in the middle of nowhere. They never declared an emergency due to that.

I think somebody was playing around in a lab with something they weren't supposed to be playing with, and maybe they dropped something. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm..........

That would better explain all the hubbub, than Ooooohhh 20 people sneezing and coughing....

Consider that the main stream media has reported (in the not too distant past) a few CDC incidents involving bad seals on their facilities and possible releases of creepy-crawlies. Something like 26 buildings not up to par.

Think I'll have me a double-shot of Tamiflu...

yaw1800 04-27-2009 01:09 AM

Its interesting because they say medical experts have been anticipating a widespread pandemic

Is Swine Flu "The Big One"??

Vicvelcro 04-27-2009 01:17 AM

Does it strike you funny that in just the past few days, not much has changed, but the hype has gone through the roof? And now certain officials are saying they've been expecting something like this? But then have lame reasons for WHY they've been expecting it, and NO explanation for why they choose to speak up about it now and have not done so before?

I probably come across as some tin-foil-hat freak. It's not my usual groove. This just really has a strange taste to it.

gurusgrafx 04-27-2009 01:32 AM

^^^ I'm putting on my foil hat.. now they may have a reason for all those fema coffins outside of atlanta.:spy:

Vicvelcro 04-27-2009 01:45 AM

Heh. You saw those, too? Neat fact about those coffins: They are plastic, and intended to be reused after cremating the temporary contents. Sounds contradictory at first, but read up on those coffins. Scary.

Don't Panic: 7 FACTS About 'Swine Flu'

With all the sensationalized news about the so-called swine flu flying around, I figured we'd better set all the facts straight.

1) So far, only 82 cases of so-called swine flu have been definitively identified worldwide, mostly in Mexico (26 confirmed, 7 deaths) and the U.S.(with 40 confirmed, no deaths). (Though about 1600 suspected cases, including 159 deaths, are reported in Mexico.) That does not add up to a pandemic swine flu outbreak.

2) This virus has nothing to do with swine. In fact, it hasn't been seen in a single animal. And you can't possibly get it from eating pork.

3)No existing vaccines can prevent this new flu strain. So no matter what you hear – even if it comes from your doctor – don't get a regular flu shot. They rarely work against seasonal flu…and certainly can't offer protection from a never-before- seen strain.

4) Speaking of this strain, it doesn't seem to have come on naturally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this particular strain has never before been seen in pigs or people. And according to Reuters, the strain is a 'genetic mix' of swine, avian and human flu. Was it created in a lab? We don't know yet.

5) The drug companies are getting excited…and that's never a good thing. According to the Associated Press at least one financial analyst estimates up to $388 million worth of Tamiflu sales in the near future – and that's without a pandemic outbreak.

6) Let's not forget that Tamiflu comes with its own problems, including side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, cough…the very symptoms you're trying to avoid. And let's not forget that Japan banned this drug for children back in 2007, after links to suicidal behavior.

7) Vaccines for this flu strain probably won't have to jump through all those annoying hurdles like clinical trials for safety and effectiveness. That won't, however, stop the government from mandating the vaccine for all of us – a very likely scenario. And if the vaccines are actually harmful…killing people, for example…the vaccine makers will be immune from lawsuits.

TMiles 04-28-2009 05:31 PM

Is our forum filled with conspiracy theorists? This is real news, it can turn deadly, and it can spread quick. Mexico City is virtually shut down and the deaths are in the hundreds. Yes, in America, the deaths will be low, as well as the industrial world, but in the third world deaths could reach thousands.

The flu killed 50 million people in 1918. That was before air travel. One viral resistant bug, could kill thousands.

Oh, by the way, Homeland Security is involved. The head of security was on all the news broadcasts this morning...

gurusgrafx 04-28-2009 05:55 PM

Its only a conspiracy theory until its proven true.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was made in a laboratory by drug companies to create business for products like Tamiflu. In a corporate run world its not about preventing or curing its about profits. Like the cure for aids that has been patented but never released or even discussed by the media.

(Patent # 5676977 if you want to look it up by the way.)

GreenBean 04-28-2009 06:07 PM

This is heading towards political talk. Fine line so do not step over it.

The first U.S. loss of life caused by H1N1 was a 23 month old Texas child.

Devastating news.

TMiles 04-29-2009 08:15 AM

Agreed, Green Bean....

Texas has had its first death, a 23 month old baby.

I should have not even used the word conspiracy. Maybe non-believers would have been a better choice of word.

Yes, the press seems much. But this press is saving lives. Any parent wants information. I am glad about school closings. Being a parent of a toddler myself in Texas, the more information to keep my child safe the better...

aspkin 05-23-2009 04:19 PM
