If you sold online during the last economic crash (2008), please hop in!!

I am interested in hearing about your experience selling online during the last economic crash that took place in 2008. Were you at all affected by it? If yes, how and why exactly do you think it affected your business? Did it take long for your sales to recover? Talk a bit about what happend.

Thanks a lot in advance...

My web business exploded during this time but the majority of that was because I focused more on internet sales and less on my two retail stores.

I am actually struggling in some ways during the current economic boom. for a decade I catered to value oriented and cheap prices and my market has changed significantly the past two years. Now a large portion is for Top end items at high cost and low volume and medium valued items at fair prices.

Are you expecting another crash in your market?

Well, I am currently selling in the electronics department (small accessories that are mainly made in China). I honestly don't know if such a market could crash. The only crash I see coming is when Chinese factories of these items get closed in the future.

This is why I am planning to move into the apparel department in the next 3-4 years. Clothing items will sell even in war times!

I've heard clothing is a nightmare. 40% return rates are common because people can't try stuff on before buying.

I wasn't selling then but I'm curious why you think those Chinese factories are going to be closed in the future? They seem to be doing great with the full blessing of their government.

A LOT of Chinese factories are seeing huge shrink. USA is bringing back a lot of manufacturing. USA has decreased the amount of subsidies to china shipping along with a variety of other things. The new Tariffs are a small burden yet made many places but stateside, especially on plastics and machined goods where is really is cheaper to make here anyways. USA has really grown other Asian countries and supported them such as Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Korea for manufacturing. USA is a small part of the total world economy but it does effect the entire world, especially China. Most south american countries have huge taxes on Chinese goods now. Australia has changed how they import items from china.

I don't know how the current trade spat between China and the US will play out. The US seems to be really pissed off about IP theft on the Chinese part. Most of these Chinese factories are capable of producing products because they simply steal design ideas...etc from American and European companies operating in China. If a deal is reached, the Chinese government could shut off IP theft within days simply because the economy over there is totally controlled by the government (This is my paranoid opinion - I hope it will never become reality :hail:).

On the other side, I think the factories already got the know-how and they are now capable of developing their own thing. If an agreement is reached with respect to IP theft, I think it will only include heavy things like Huawei...etc and small things such as accessories will be totally ignored (This is my optimistic opinion which I hope will right :amen:)

The US is not bringing anything back as far as manufacturing is concerned. Trump is the biggest liar in the history of US politics. He gave people some freebies and kept government spending untouched. I think the US is ahead of some really bad days because of what Trump has done so far. I strongly believe Bernie the communist is going to win the 2020 election. Go to YouTube and search for recent videos of Bernie, you will be stunned by the amount of Likes that fraud is getting!!! There are a lot of people wanting to freely volunteer working for his campaign. A lot of young people seem to believe they could get free health care and college because the government/rich must pay for it and the man to make this happen is Bernie :comp5:

Well.....Facts are facts. Our economy and currency is roaring. Lowest un employment rate in most living peoples history etc.... Lowest black unemployment rate in all of recorded history. I could go on and on and on. Heck even Fiat right now is trying to manufacture here. 6500 new jobs in the **** hole of Detroit.

My view is 180 degrees from yours along with my manufacturing experiences. Right now I have more USA vendors than Foreign and that has not been the case in my decade of manufacturing history. In my nitch, everyone wants USA made products. Most major brands in my nitch are machining goods, molding goods, finishing goods here stateside when possible. More and more in years to come without any doubt.

These are facts....not speculation from across the other side of the earth :peace:

Bernie really doesn't stand a chance. Perhaps your viewpoint is being scewed by a liberal media who refuses to report anything positive about Trump regardless of what he does.

I personally would love to see Ron Paul in office, but I realize that's just a dream. Trump basically injected air into the bubble instead of deflating it. He increased government spending and cut taxes. I hope I am wrong though because a troubled US means a troubled world.

I started an Electronics eBay business in 2008-2009 and hit $20,000/month in just 2-3 months. People still spend money!

Decreased taxes yet increased tax revenue. If you are talking about the deficit, it is essentially the same. It is virtually impossible to decrease without growing the economy.

Ron Paul will never run again. Rand Paul most likely will, but in 10 years. He has no chance of winning either, although he is my favorite politician. :peace:

Same thing happened last year and Hillary stuck it deep in his azz!

If he runs again, all he'll get is a FOURTH HOUSE for free. ;)

Remember how everybody joked about Trump running for president? Everyone thought it was laughable and Trump will never get elected. Bernie Sanders has an army of young voters. Had he not been undermined by the Democratic Party, the man really stood a chance in my opinion.

Trump voters feel betrayed because he hasn't built the wall. So don't be shocked if they don't vote him in the next time. Even people in the media who supported Trump in the past are upset and far from being satisfied (Michael Savage, Alex Jones, Ann Coulter... even Fox News!).

Don't get me wrong, I love capitalism and I adore the American model. However, I think people are frustrated and I am worried that they will act on their frustration by voting for a socialist who waterdowns his true agendas by sugary promises like free health care and education for all.

Ummmm......Not at all LOL Not in any way. The wall people are more and more furious at the democrats plus.....the wall will be built. What the hell are you reading because it is not at all accurate.

There is more Trump supporters today than ever before and more people HATING the democratic party including life long democrats. My facebook pages are blowing up with lifelong Democrats supporting trump and tearing down Chuck, Nancy, Elizabeth and Maxine.

Re: If you sold online during the last economic crash (2008), please hop in!!

The wall thing is something the American media, and apparently the International media as well, has been pushing hard. I'd like to think the average working class American really doesn't care about it though. It's just another stupid point for talking heads on cable news to bicker about, and to say "orange man bad" about. I certainly don't care, and nobody I associate with cares about a wall being built. Why would I? It's very unlikely that any company I own is going to be competing for a construction contract. Trump has followed through on more of his campaign promises than I've ever seen an American politician follow through on before. Every person here in SC I know that supported Trump during the election still supports him fully today.

You'd have to come over here to get an understanding about what the attitude in America is really like, upwards. Major media outlets are all so anti-Trump that it's impossible for you to understand American politics. You're only being told one side. You thinking Bernie has a chance in hell proves that point in my opinion. :P

You're well-spoken for a German, regarding the English language. And pretty knowledgeable about American things.
