Hah - closest pet I had to that was a salamander with turtles - poor salamander didn't last that long sadly

a pair of barn swallows built a nest above my front door, they used to come around many times a day to check out the nest, and slept there over nite.
Now it looks like they have abandoned the nest,I cant tell if there are eggs inside,my ladder is not tall enough.
What happens?
We have state law we cannot hose down the nest, but if they are not using it,it should be removed, not to mention all that crap they left on the ground?

Hah. We just had the same thing happen to us a few weeks ago. I don't know what kind of bird it was, but a small bird made a nest between the two panes of glass in one of our windows that has an air conditioner in it. I was watching the bird make it and I thought she had a really good idea since the spot she chose would shelter her from anything dangerous outside. She was pushing little twigs and pieces of grass through a small crack in the window as she was building the nest, and I'd have to sweep up her mess daily.

She seems to have abandoned the nest as soon as she got it done though. We have a large black lab, and I think our dog running out the back door all the time scared the bird off since she built her nest right by our back door.

I'm just going to wait a few weeks to see if she decides to use the nest. If she doesn't use it, I'll remove the nest from our window and throw it in the woods. I don't think the game warden is going to be alerted about a nest disturbance and come arrest me, or anything like that.

barn swallows are small and swift, they like to build nests near human and besides mud and grass and twigs, they also use feather .
I learn that birds can keep laying eggs and then come back to sit on them when they are done laying eggs but where do they go in the mean time?
yes,dog would not be a good sight, they can also leave if they sense danger for themselves, they will give up the eggs or babies,or after sitting on them, they realise those eggs are no good and will never hatch,or may be one or both died/
But they built the nest above my front door,no animal can get up there, the only ones would be a bird of prey or a cuckoo or a human?

Bird of prey could sniff them out for sure - or lizards in the area who will climb up (if you have those)

That gives me the creeps! Lizards climbing up the walls of a home.

We have a spieces called Lace Monitor. They are mean, ornery and can climb walls.

Yuck.

You get around that by having a big back yard with trees and lots of vegetation.

They will come visit and interact with you. Or you could visit this place!

What is fascinating is their closeness to the Komono Dragon Lizard of Indonesia.

I'll have to visit AU some day.

Is it true that Australia is being overrun by the Chinese through property acquisition backed by the Chinese Gov't? I'm only asking because I notice the two language flags on the reptile park website are AU and CN.

Yep, there is an influx of both Chinese and Indian investors.

I was reading somewhere a few months ago that, at least the Chinese investment side, is a Chinese government sponsored subversion tactic being used to slowly take over AU so it can be incorporated into China within this century. I can't remember exactly where I read it, but the article was saying that a Chinese person living in AU simply has to ask the Chinese government for X amount of $'s when they're looking at property to buy, and they'll almost always be given the full amount for nothing (other than loyalty to the Chinese communist party, of course).

Scary stuff. Good luck, GB. I hope you're busy with your island hopping when the final conversion takes place. :P

The Chinese do a lot of business with Australia, mainly mineral resources they need to industrialise.
Australia always have a large Asian population-Chinese from HK,Vietnamese ,then comes the mainland Chinese/
It is hard to immigrate to US,Canada and Australia become 2 popular countries to settle.
When the Chinese from China want to diversify their wealth or hide their wealth, they buy real estate in US,Canada and Australia.
I have never heard of China wanting to t ake over Australia,it must be something fabricated by CIA,once they did a study and said China would be broken up ?
China does have problems with its minority races like the UIGHUR and Mongolians and Tibetans, but the study stated the Hans populated provinces would be separated ,which is absurd.
If anyone should have and would have taken over Australia back in early 20th century would be the Japanese, the reason they invaded China is the resources in Manchuria and the land ,but Australia back then was part of British Commonwealth and sparsely populated, the British used to send prisoners there !
Now you cant just take over a country, unless the folks decide to join which is what the Chinese govt is hoping with Taiwan.
Come to think of it,after WWII,the Western powers suggested 2 places for the jews to establish a nation state-Palestine or West Africa, they should offer Australia and we would no have all these Middle East conflicts.
The Hamids and others have restocked their rockets after shooting 700 of them into Israel not t oo long ago !
I wonder if they need AMZN FBA?

YESTERday I found a dead hummingbird in my backyard,I do have hummingbirds and they serve as alarm clock in the morning, but a dead bird??
I just caught a baby frog, and have it covered with clear see thru dome shaped lid,the kind they keep the rotisserie chicken you see in the supermarket, should I release it?
We use to see many when it rains, now it is rare to see them, the one big green one I released in my backyard is alive and well and croaking as we have rain !
