Sending Wholesale Catalog to Local Stores

Do you think it would be a good idea to send wholesale catalogs to local businesses that pertains to the field I'm in, or do you think it would cause issues?

No real issues - it's old school marketing :) still works - mail order style

I spam all my bigger customers in this way and it's very effective - except I don't do it locally.

It is more effective if you show up in person with sample.
HK merchants are known to hop on a plane with their jewelry,ivory carvings at one time to go from store to store in Hawaii.
Some who have factories in HK or China will ship their goods in advance to a US location,like porcelain vases,jars,figurines,then rent a van loaded with such goodies and travel all over the country selling to retail stores.
