Default Iphone theft

There is a lengthy article on how scammers steal your iphone, usually in a bar where they socialise with you,ask to use your phone to take photo, watch you enter your passcode ,used your phone and shut it down and returned it to you.
They either rob or steal your phone, now they have your passcode, then they know your password, they know the apps you have on the phone and the photos which may contain driver license and SSN,clean out your bank accounts, send money out from Paypal/venmo and buy things, when they are done, remove the option of tracing where your phone is and sell your phone .
One guy out of town came to Manhattan, went to a Hell Kitchen bar and ended up dead in a room with his phone missing.

Sounds like some kind of click-bait story you read and believed..

I would imagine 99% of people use face unlock or their fingerprint unlock to get into their phones. Not to mention that if someone actually did use a code, it would be Very hard to see them enter it.

code is the best protection and activation of option that content gets deleted after wrong code was inserted 10 times

it would take a lot of ressources to get access to a coded iphone without knowing the code , the police can do it but even they need months

This article is from WSJ,there is a police detective who helps to solve the crime.
Facial cognition is not good enough, passcode is better,
they will watch you carefully when you enter passcode or even take a picture while you enter it,they can go to your Google Drive and see if any information is useful.like SSN,ADDRESS,date of birth

it is actually almost funny but the police can not open old phones (with buttons) if they are protected by a 4 digit code

they have to ask suspects to tell them the code otherwise they will not get access or if the crime is serious it will take them months to break it

This is why I love Android. Not only do you have to get through my lock screen, but EACH important app is also password protected by fingerprint (We have that option). Also, if you guys ever decide to sell your phones online/offline, always encrypt it 1st prior to factory resetting it. Just thought I'd toss this out there, because this thread was very random, Lol.

for those who have sensitive information on iphone it is possible to delete it remotely , this happens with police regularly who seize iphones from suspects and content is deleted through apple ID before iphone can be investigated

good to know, wonder if deleted content can be recovered?
Like the pc,it goes into the recycle bin but not removed until you remove them, then there may still be a way to recover.
like drug dealer who dumps packages of drug into toilet, and flush them, police will called a plumbing service which will insert an instrument mounted with a camera into the drain pipe and photo white packets floating in the water

delete is not erase, what is deleted can be recovered if nothing has overwritten it.

it would take some serious forensic work , it is highly unlikely they would even try if the crime is not serious , of course if backups were removed as well

A prominent business man and his second wife decide to divorce,he thought it would be just like many of his business deals, his lawyer will ask her to come to the office and tell her how much she would receive.
But his wife being a lawyer has her own ideas, she has a sum in mind and thats far more than what her man has to offer.
But he has friends who are technically savvy ,they recovered data from her laptop which she carried on trips ,she often accompanied her hubby on many of his worldwide dealings and whatever they recovered managed to chop her $$ demand down to a more acceptable level.
Just for fun, what about that French movie where the wife killed her hubby when he comes home and asked for a divorce, she hit him with a frozen leg of lamb,he died and she put the leg of lamb in the oven and left the house, when she came home, she called the police.
Police came and investigated, lamb was ready and she invited them to a lamb dinner which they enjoyed, but they finally solved the crime by recovering the weapon!

if the iphone was set to encrypted it is going to become very expensive to even try to recover the data

similar thing with pc's by the way , you download veracrypt , encrypt the system. anyone who tries to get access would have to spend lots of money and time to do it as this would take a forensic examination , certainly no one would do it to find out what you are selling on ebay and amazon

Anyone looking into what you have on your PC is not interested in your AMZN or Ebay activities, they are looking for credit card number, bank accounts, passwords or emails with others, your SSN if it is there.
