going to restaurant is always a treat,may be you just dont hang around with the right people.
I did not realise the restaurant business margin is so low 3-4%?
I can see menu price minus cost of material = MARGIN is 70% in many cases,so it must be the overhead-labor and rent/utilities.
rent in popular places have gone up a lot.

Morning chuckles phaz - restaurant margin has always been tight...the use of cc and fee's charge by cc companies make it worse.

Funny thing is that they make more on the sale of drinks actually ...in most circumstances

But getting a liquor license is expensive,also in some neighborhood,diners do not drink or get desert,coffee.
But they tip generously.

Long ago,a couple I know,hubby is sick but both love to eat out.
Money is tight and the wife said promise me,when we eat out,you order cheap wine.
He said Yes,but he ordered $15 instead of $5 wine,he figured he is dying,why not !
