Michigan Oil Spill
Well I actually live in Michigan, and this is a terrible thing to see. ANOTHER STUPID OIL SPILL!!!!
Quantcast
CALHOUN COUNTY, Michigan (WZZM) - The oil in the water is evident to people living near the Kalamazoo River.
WZZM 13 Director Al Forist lives in the Kalamazoo area and was able to record some video and talk with some of the residents who live along the Kalamazoo River in Battle Creek.
It's easy to find the globs of oil floating in the river. You can see the clumps forming on top of the water. You can also see the oil getting caught in the grass along the shoreline. That is just a glimpse of what more than 840,000 gallons of oil can do to the river.
Residents like Russ Halk say it's heartbreaking to see so much oil seeping into the water. He explains, "I just dipped my hand down in the water on Clark Road Bridge where the water is gathering on the side, big, tar ball and I had to use hand cleaner and solvent to wipe it off my hand so you can imagine what this does to animals." Halk also says he saw a turtle near the shore, covered in oily tar.
Some people living near the spill tell us the oil smells like burned tires. They say the smell is so overwhelming it's burning their eyes and bothering their sinuses.
