It is now illegal to import cigarettes to the US. They cite the Jenkins act.
Smokers have become a persecuted minority. Not only did they stop allowing importing cigarettes for personal use, but several states sued to have the records of these companies turned over to them, so they could steal (ummm... I mean, collect) more taxes from smokers.
Many years ago, I used to order online from SenecaSmokes.com. At the time, I lived in Chicago, one of the HIGHEST CIGARETTE TAX jurisdictions in the nation. So, once a month I would buy 4 cartons and have them shipped priority mail.
Seven years later, SenecaSmokes turned the purchase records over to the government, something they SWORE they would never do. Then, the State of Illinois sent me a bill for the back taxes for everything I had bought years earler. They were nice enough to include a note telling me that I was STEALING from Illinois taxpayers by ordering cigarettes online, and that if I did not want to have to pay fines and penalties, I would have to cough up over $5,000 immediately.
Two weeks later, I get another bill from Crook County wanting even more money.
BOTH WANTED ME TO PAY NOT WHAT THE TAXES WERE AT THE TIME, BUT THE NEW HIGHER TAXES THEY INSTITUTED YEARS LATER.
I never gave them a dime. As far as I am concerned the politicians, especially in Illinois, are all a bunch of criminals and thieves. Of course, everything they do is legal, since THEY WRITE THE LAWS. But that does not make it right.
In Chicago, a pack of cigarettes goes for nearly $10. That is a PACK, not a CARTON. Almost all of it in extortion (ummm... I mean EXCISE) taxes.
Of course, many people in Chicago buy their cigarettes outside of Crook County, mainly in Indiana. And a representative of Crook County was being interviewed on TV regarding revenue collection in the down economy. He stated that cigarette tax revenues were falling far short of expectations. HE ACTUALLY BLAMED THE STATE OF INDIANA, BECAUSE THEIR CIGARETTE TAXES WERE TOO CHEAP!!!
So the politicians view this not as a problem of their taxes being too high, but that a neighboring state sets their taxes TOO LOW! TYPICAL!
If you want to save money LEGALLY, Google Fresh Choice Tobacco. They sell an electric cigarette machine that is very easy to use and works very well. I have used one for over 4 years now, and it takes under 2 minutes to make a pack of your own cigarettes. They have a way of selling you the tobacco LEGALLY, free of taxes. Yes, this method is not as convenient as just buying packs of cigarettes, but at about $1 per pack it is the cheapest thing going.
And depriving the greedy, grasping politicians of more money - PRICELESS!!!
It seems that more and more, the government wants to tie everyone's hands and extract more money from the average person. While, of course, giving breaks to big businesses and the wealthy. Warren Buffet (the gazillionaire investor) actually agrrees with this. He wrote that his SECRETARY actually paid more in taxes one year than he did, and he felt there is something wrong with that. Stand up guy, that Warren Buffet is. I don't begrudge him one penny of his fortune.
I dearly love my country, and I realize that I was lucky to be born in the greatest nation on the planet. You would have a hard time finding someone more patriotic than I am. But that doesn't mean that I like the current crop of politicians. Democrats, Republicans, it doesn't make a difference. BOTH parties spend money they don't have. Granted, they spend it on different things, but the point is the money is still spent. So, they need more and more taxes to keep the whole mess going.
