Default Need ID for cashing a money order?

I'm new to money orders. If someone buys a money order from the post office, will the receiver need to have his ID scanned/copied/recorded/etc when he decides to cash it in at his local post office? Or do they just take a look to make sure the names match up?

Just wondering what type of authentication needs to happen in order for someone to get that money order cashed. Thanks for the help.

You do need an ID and the picture and name needs to match what is on the money order.

Sate ID/drivers license.
US passport or military ID

I believe they do not accept school IDs or any id with ur pic like a bank card.

MO's are prey to unimaginable scams, ID is imperative. Must comply fully with guidelines.

Federal offence to not supply correct ID for the cashing of them.

U may be able to talk the buyer to send it with name left blank. Or even tell them to send it to a name that u know u can use to have it cashed. Just say ur out of town and if they send it to ur brothers or somthing like that they will put his name and then bam u can cash it.

Here are your best options....

1. Never accept money orders on stealth.
2. Email them outside of ebay messeges and tell them if they are going to give you a money order, than it has to be made out to "Jon Doe,etc., etc., " because that is the boss/financial person/owner, and it will only be able to be cashed with that name.
3. If you go to the bank, they will NOT cash your money order with a different name or address, because obveously it isnt you. Thats like going into a bank and trying to cash a check with someone elses name on it. Cant and will not ever happen. So, I would personally never accept money order, and if the sale comes down to money orders or nothing, I would go to option 2, but this could become a huge pain in the butt if you do it consistantly.

Well I was more concerned about the methods of tracking down someone who has cashed a money order.

Ex. I cash a money order for a product I sold, then a few days later, the person who bought it wants their money back. Is it possible/legal for the USPS to track me down?

It is always possible to track it if extreme measures are taken. USPS can track it but the question is why would they if you doing solid business?

Only thing USPS will give you is the copy of the front and back side of a money order. I was scammed onces, MO was cashed and I never received goods. Filed compalint received the persons first and last name plus thier bank account and cashing bank. Reported the person on IC3 FBI Internet crime site. Within days person contacted me asking to take the claim off. I did once I received my money plus extra for my trouble.
