re: Another anniversary 9/11/2013 Fire Chief Robert Pizzuti being comforted by one of the often unsung heroes of this day.
Over 300 dogs got brought into the debris. The duties of the canines were divided between search and rescue (SAR) dogs and Therapy dogs who simply gave support to the workers.
They spent hours doing what they were trained to do. Going through rubble, sniffing, looking, and sometimes finding a buried human, still alive.
After some days, their duties turned to still looking, still sniffing but now for bodies. They carried out their roles with great skill and courage.
At the end of a shift, their rewards were to have their booties taken off their paws. They then got to play with the 1st responders.
This was therapy for both parties.
What would be more natural than a game between man and dog.
Like the humans, some dogs' lives were cut short by the stresses of this day. Several died from cancers attritubted to exposure to the site. The Heroic Dogs of 9/11 | Life With Dogs |
